Problem with pedals for t56 in auto 85 trans am

I mounted the brake/clutch pedal combination by the brake pedal bolts. I then drilled out the 2 mounting holes through the bracket so it would be in the right place. I then used a hole saw to cut out hole for the master cylinder to go through. I put the master cylinder throught the hole and the u bolt through and put the pedals back on. Everything bolted up, but the pedal does not come clear to the top. It acts as if the master cylinder is to low, but it is where the bracket on the pedals lined up for the holes. If I hold the slave cylinder in and have someone press the pedal there is hardly any movement. This is really pissing me off. What can I do or do I need to do. Let me know asap so I can get the car back together.

Thanks

Ben

umm, im not sure if this is part of you prob or not since i cant look at it, but the hole for the master cyl needs to be oval shaped.. just slighly so the pedal's rod can travel thru it..... that could be holding you up....

i would unbolt the cyl from the firewall and see if you can move the pedal then....
its kinda hard to find where its binding just by what you can type....

No, it is not binding. It is to far away like I cut the hole too low. Even with the master cylinder fully extended it does not put the pedal all the way up. My brother had an idea. He mentioned mounting it on the inside of the firewall instead of outside so it would move it closer to where it mounts to the pedal. This looks like it might actually work but would it cause any problems.

Thanks

I know I sholdnt have to do it, but the only thing I can figure is that I cut the hole in the wrong place all though it cant be far off because I used the pedal bracket as a template. The rod just isnt long enough to let the pedal come clear up. Would there be any way to lengthen the rod on the master cylender?

So your problem is that the clutch pedal isnt as high up as the brake pedal? I just did the t-56 swap and my clutch isnt either, doesnt affect performance at all, clutch still releases nicely and such.

yes, that is the problem. Have you looked to see how much travel you have on yours? Since my pedal is like that it only pushes the master cylinder rod in about 1/2 an inch. on my brothers 91 t5 car it his travels about an inch. I just dont want to end up with the clutch not disengaging.

Also last night I tried remounting the pedals in the donar car and the clutch is higher than the brake and allows more travel on the master cylinder than I have. I didnt think that where I mounted it could have made as much of a difference as it did since I used the pedal bracket as a template. The part of the bracket where the master cylinder did have some play, so it could have been mounted slightly different, but I dont see how it would make this much difference.

Thanks

My advice would be to install everything like it is and try it, I dont have much pedal travel but it releases cleanly and hooks hard, You could try to bend the clutch pedal upwards to allow more travel before it hits the firewall. I'll take pics of it tonight if you want.

Put it together and try it. I think my master rod travels more like an inch, but the clutch disengages within the first 1/4 of the throw. I'll get pics in a few if I can find my camera.

Well, as much as it hurt to do it, I fixed it. I made another set of mounting holes and elongated the main hole and now the pedal sits right. I made a rubber gasket that went behind the bracket on the inside to seal it. I really didnt want to elongate that hole because I got it to look so perfect the first time and didnt want to mess it up. Seriously, it looked like it could have come from factory that way, but now I know it should work right and I wont have to take it back apart.

Yup. Thanks for the help. The whole pedal ordeal set me back a while though. If it wasnt for screwin with them so much I should have had the thing most the way in already. Yesterday was the only real day I got much of a chance to work with it anyway. I just got to fix my mistake today. I cant wait to get it finnished.
