I had one that I got in their "Hyper Action Valvebody Kit" in my old 89 L98 Iroc and didn't notice much. My buddy got the transgo kit which has the smaller "vette" servo but had a bigger .500 boost valve instead of the .480 "GN" boost valve and his car shifted slightly better. Both cars were the same year and optioned the same and ran tit for tat and drove about the same before either of us got shift kit's. So it seems to me that your money would be better spent on a bigger boost valve from darrel young or level 10. Just food for thought.

I have heard a lot of the tranny experts on this board say to stay away from the billet servo. They can damage your transmission. The corvette servo works really well.

The Corvette servo, along with the right "accumulation", boost valves, and the correct valve body kit will do more for the transmission (in respects to longevity), than just adding a large 2nd gear billet servo to "hit hard" in 2nd gear. Shifts that are "too hard" especially at "part throttle", will do nothing for ET, transmission life, and in fact can be very harmful (if not dangerous) to the driver or the drivetrain in the long run.

the billet dervo won't make it shift much harder than a corvette one. because it takes longer to fill the area with fluid. what it will do is add more apply pressure to hold the clutches together. and that's what you want.

I have personal experience with transmission failures from the billet servo. It pushed the apply pin right through the pocket of the band. I will not ever install another one. Now matter how you explain that its a parts failure, the builder always looks bad when the tranny has to come back out. The Corvette servo has done everything I have asked of it and has never let me down.

i wonder if it's because of the extender pin that comes in the kit and is an optional piece. in the link above is a scan of the instructions. we left it off cause not needed for our tranny. people may be putting it on just because. and not needing it because the pin is still long enough without it.

I had the same problem with putting the pin through the band, the vette 2nd gear servo probably made the biggest difference in shift quality, the billet overdrive made the biggest difference in my bank account!

Well here is mt 2 cents. I have the Fairbanks servo in my 86. Now just to let you know, the trans was slipping, very soft soggy shifts, and the OD was kaput. So when I had the trans serviced in october last year thats when I had it go in. I can be almost 99% sure that the servo was the "bullet in the gun" as my brother put it. Cause now it needs a rebuild and wont get out of 1st gear. The guy I am having do it will be putting some extremely heavy duty parts in it this time around. Now most ppl are gonna say, I told you so. But what i did to my tranny is like a 200 shot of nitrous on a motor with bad seals, rings and high mileage. To me it just means, you shouldn do it, unless your tranny is in good shape.

reply from 700r4.com now theirs is 4th gear apply only they make. they agree with the length issue by putting on the extender for the pin among other things.

Thank you for your inquiry.

We build our servo to produce a crisper cleaner apply of fourth gear not because we have every experienced the need for added clamping pressure in overdrive.

We haven’t had any failures of any kind with our Servo and have never experienced the type of failure you are describing in all the years we have specialized in building these transmissions. The common failure is ripping out the “extruded anchor hole” at the anchored end of the band. This can be remedied with our special extra long anchor pin. The extra length positions the anchor pin far enough into the band so it positions at the parent band strap material. This prevents this extruded hole breakage issue. These pins are an excellent method to eliminate this problem. We offer these heat treated pins for $6.95.

If you or anyone else has experienced band breakage at the servo pin end of the band, this is obviously caused by excessive force being used during apply of the band while engaging second or fourth. Because of the rotation dynamics during second gear apply it always applies with a great deal more violence than overdrive fourth exhibits. The opposite rotation during fourth gear apply naturally “softens” this event. Because of this, I would suspect the second gear apply event is the root of this problem before looking at fourth gear apply. That being said, the servo is only one of many factors that would contribute to this failure. It could be caused by a combination of many factors; apply pressure, length of apply pin, feed orifice size and the accumulator set up used; just to name a few things.

Our Billet servo is $49.00. complete.

If you wish to discuss this, you are welcome to call me on my direct line, 760-949-5240

Sincerely

Steve Holmes
