aftermarket ring and pinion produces noise! help!

hi......i have an 87 iroc and i bought a installation kit for the rear end from ratech and its just the bearings, shims, and bearings for the axels but i didnt get the ring and pinion yet because im not sure of whether to get GM 3:73 gears or any other aftermarket gears 3:73. what im trying to basicly say is that mechanics and other people have been telling me that no matter how good the mechanic is and that he has every right tool to do the rear rebuild that aftermarket gears for the GM REAR makes a type of howling or wyning noise. is this true? and they said that the gm gears dont do that because of the specific ration or suttin or size of gear ratio that is so small to correct or to be so perfect. so what should i do and is this a very true statement. to me it seems like it is? pleas help. thanks guys.:hail: :hail: :hail: :hail: :hail:

It is partially true.

Some aftermarket gears, but not all, are carefully optimized for strength. By nature of the shape this makes the teeth take, they are noisier. It's a compromise: you give up that little creature comfort (silence) to get some strength.

Most mechanics of the car fix-it shop type are very leery of installing aftermarket gears, because people bring them back complaining about the noise. I can't say I blame them; a few pointless warranty gear swaps would make me not willing to do it again, too.

Some of the aftermarket gears are as quiet as OEM. Superior & Dana come to mind.

The particular ones that people complain about are the Richmod drag-race gears. Their metallurgy and tooth design is very specifically set up to withstand shock loading, such as will typically shatter stock type gears. But this not only makes them noisy, it makes them short-lived in a street-driven car.

If you get GM Motive, Superior, or Dana, you shouldn't have any noise trouble. Unless you plan on very little street use, avoid the Richmond racing gears.

If you're paying somebody to do this for you, about the last thing you need to be worrying about is which gears are cheaper. You'll have about 6 large in this by the time your car is rolling again; do you think shaving $15 or $20 off the parts cost will have been worth it, if you have to pay to have it done over again?

Stick with good parts. The Ratech kit is OK; have them change the axle bearings & seals while they're there, it's like $30 of parts, and new those means every single wear part in your rear will be new, so it should be just like the day it rolled off the factory floor again.

How are Richmond street gears or Summit Racing gears???

I heard from a good mechanic that he only likes running OEM gears. But they cost a lot more.
