way to get 700r4 to shift into 4th gear sooner?

I dont know if it has a problem or not, but my tranny seems to stay in 3rd gear too long. at 50mph im turning ~2200rpm in third but if i give it some more gas and get the speed up to about 60 it will shift up into 4th and then i can back off the gas and be in fourth gear at 1500rpm at 50mph which is great for gas mileage. it will even stay in 4th gear at 40mph at like 1300rpm. is there anyway to get 4thgear to come up quicker, because sometimes im between 40-50mph for a long stretch and it will stay in 3rd gear at around 2200rpm or so, which isnt good for gas mileage.

anybody?? also it seems like in the morning it wont go into overdrive for a mile or two and it helps if the car goes 60 first then after that it goes into 4th easier. also works fine when everything is heated up. is this normal? should i do a fluid change?

Something is definately not right... I would suspect the throttle valve system--either a cable adjustment, or a tired throttle valve spring.... It should shift into fourth gear at approx. 40mph at light throttle...

well mine shifts into 4th at exactly 40mph but only after its been running a while. in the mornings it takes longer for it to shift, usually around 60mph. after its been running a while it will shift into 4th at 40mph turning 1200-1300rpm and stay there unless i give it a lot of throttle. i think i forgot to mention that. seems to do this only when "cold".

I'm assuming you checked the level/condition of the fluid once its hot and idling in park??

my fluid is at the right level but its dark. does not smell burnt, more like fresh power steering fluid. i was told not to do a flush on it because the fluid is probably pretty old and changing it could cause more trouble then fix. my tranny shifts fine though, cant see any problems other then 3rd gear being held longer in the morning when the car is still cold. everyone i ask though has a different opinion on whether or not i should change the fluid/filter. i was thinking maybe just drop the pan for an inspection/filter change and just add whatever fluid i lost from the pan, and not do a full flush? that shouldnt cause me any problems right? is the late shift into 4th when the car is still cold a symptom of bad fluid or is that normal until the thing warms up a little?

Sure it's not the TCC locking? Evidence points that way.

could be the tc but the rpm drop is a lot more then a couple hundred rpms at the point. when i notice the tc locking, the rpms drop 200rpm or so. because at 50mph it will be turning like 2100rpms then when it shifts its 1500rpm. thats a gear change and not a tc locking i think.
