Throttle Valve Cable Adjustment

I just tried to adjust my TV cable to alleviate the problem of late, high revving shifts. I pressed in the adjustment tang, and tried to move the cable back into the plastic housing. It absolutely will not go in. Do you guys think that the cable may be frozen in the housing from corrosion or something else? I just got the car a little while ago, and the TV cable wasn't even routed through the metal bracket along with the throttle cable. I had to pull it and mount it myself. It barely reached and I did have to pull pretty hard to get it to reach to mount. Did I maybe jack something up?

Okay now push the slider back in the cable a couple clicks.

ok, next time I'll remember to crush that button. Now here's the thing: where's the 'slider'? Is it inside the button assembly, or is it that plastic bulb shaped thing on the cable? The plastic thing is broken, and when I am able to move the cable, there is no ratcheting taking place, and there doesn't seem to be anything to hold it to any sort of adjustment.

The plastic bulb is at the front end of the slider. the button is on the cable "housing."

It's VERY common that you have to physically move the slider to adjust. The cable won't always drag it out of the housing.

lol... this is almost getting funny... thanx for the help so far JMD.

Ok... I can get the slider to move out from the housing towards the front of the car, but it already seems to be depressed into the housing as far as it will go. After I pulled it out and locked it into place and reading and re-reading the tech article on the site. Although I haven't gotten any sort of 'ratcheting' I think I see what's going on. That broken plastic 'bulb' I spoke of in one of my posts I believe is supposed to connect to the throttle body blade lever (the same lever the throttle cable is connected to). Not exactly sure what you call it. Anyway, It doesn't connect the cable to that lever since it is broken. I see the rivet coming out of the lever, and I tried putting the cable on it. I see that it would fit perfectly, if half of the plastic were not broken and missing. Does this sound right to you? It seems that this would be the way that the transmission and throttle work in unison.

Ah, your "bulb" is my "clip" so now that we're on the same page... might be able to salvage a clip/bulb and then recrimp a retainer on the end of the cable to keep it on there.

Nothing is funny about no functional TV.

Upper TV cable end

Call your local tranny shop and ask if the carry a Teckpak-Fitzall
K35955CE Detent cable end-upper. It just snaps onto the cable.
You can see it at www.teckpak-fitzall.com. Click on Products tab
at the top of the page.

No problem! I've had one in my toolbox for several years. Kinda
funny that those clips don't break if you have a new one in stock!

I just got a new clip for the cable, and adjusted it almost in the manner found in the tech article. Instead of operating the throttle lever by hand, I used the pedal. I heard the three 'clicks' from the unit ratcheting and adjusting itself, but now the trans doesn't want to kick into overdrive. Also, it's actually shifting later in the RPM band than before. I readjusted the tv cable by pushing in the slider a click or two but it really didn't change much. The guy I bought the car from said the car had a TH-350 in it, but he had put a 700R4 back in. I'm kindof stumped here and a little frustrated. What should I be doing to troubleshoot this?

Edit: While crawling around the engine bay, I have got vacuum lines that aren't connected to anything! I plugged one that leads to the vacuum canister beneath the charcoal canister since the canister was detached when I got the car. There is a vacuum line that begins at a small vacuum diapragm next to the charcoal canister. It runs along the d/s fenderwell and to the rear of the engine where it tee's off. There is one line that is not connected to anything, but was laid beneath the plenum between the runners. I can't seem to find any exposed vacuum ports, and I can't find this hose in any of the emission diagrams. Might this have something to do with it?

ok, my eyes are ready to pop out after reaserching everything I could find on 700R4's. http://www.700r4.com kicks butt. Anyway... since the transmission was changed from a TH350 to the 700R4, could the TV cable be a different length? I now know that the TV cable is the sole input point from the engine to the car, and in the footsteps of the "keep it simple stupid" philosophy, would I want to replace the TV cable with a new one? I mean, when I put the new clip on the cable and attached it to the throttle lever, the shift points went up from 2500 to 3000 RPM's, and I did adjust the cable properly. Any thoughts?
