700R4 slipping

today while coming home from work i gave the car some throttle and it down shifted fine but the RPM's went up real fast but finally cought around 4500rpm. the problem is like a manual transmission car when the clutch is sliping but its a auto. any idea on what this could be?

It could be a number of things. First thing to do is ensure that the fluid level is correct. Low fluid level could it. Also a plugged/dirty filter could starve the trans momentarily till the revs got enough fluid pumped to apply the clutches.

It could be, but it is usually somthing else. When converters go out they start to realy overheat and burn up the fluid. The fluid would be unmistakably burned by smell. If you can see the torque converter (cover off) it would even look like it had been overheated (dark/discolored). They would also shed a good bit of metal into the system. It is definatly something internal though. Best thing to start with is a fluid and filter change. That will let you see what and how much debris (metal) is in the pan, and change the filter. I have seen instances where it is just a clogged filter.
Good luck.

Pull the pan and check out the debris in the bottom, if there isn't too much you might want to look at the pump or somewhere in that vicinity. Not trying to be the beare of bad news but from expirience you probably have a fried clutch. Good luck to you, hopefully its not fried.
