Everything I've ever run across relating to this states that NON World Class T5's ( 83-87 ) get normal gear oil such as 75-90. World Class versions ( 88-92 ) get Dextron ATF.
Every tranny guy I know recommends to go with Mobil 1 synthetic fluid in either case.

its very inportant that u use dexron II or III because some parts inside the trans are glued on and any other oil will disolve the glue thats what the factory manual says

Make sure you find the right oil. It helps alot to pay attention to what came out of it. You can tell the difference between dexron III and gear lube by it's consistency and smell.
I had to work on a T5 a few years back in my 87 v6 firebird. According to the manuals I had seen, some years got gear lube, some got ATF, and some got like 30 weight (unspecified). To make matters worse, my tranny had writing on the outside of it, in some kind of chalk, as if the tranny had been bought at a junkyard by a previous owner, so I didn't really know what it came from. I had a buddy of mine helping me, and between the two of use, we couldn't choose between gear oil and atf. so we went half and half. 2 years later, when we took out the tranny (clutch work), we changed the tranny oil while we had it out. It came out nice and...well, shiny. Lots of gold looking flakes in it (wear from syncros, maybe?). Anyway, that's what happens if you get the wrong oil in it.
The funny thing is, the tranny never had a functional problem. Never missed a shift, never made a noise, and was never hard to shift. Nonetheless, I'm sure putting the wrong oil in didn't do it any good.

ok, I got it.
maybe these crappy noises out of the transmission will flew away, when I change the oil.
I even don't know how much is in there anymore, but I do not have a good feeling because when we swapped in a alu-driveshaft it has lost a bit.
I don't know how much (and more important what) was in there, when I bought the car one year ago!
will do it soon...

It's on the side of the transmission.
Be absolutely certain you get the right plug, because one of them isn't actually a plug. One of them is the bolt that holds the reverse linkage in place, and if you take it out, the reverse linkage(inside the transmission) will fall down, and then you have to take the tranny out and disassemble it to fix it.

I looked up a parts diagram. The fill and drain plugs are on the right side (as the tranny is installed in the car...i guess passenger side I should say). The bolt I warned you about is on the driver's side.
Just make sure you use the plugs on the passenger side, and you'll be fine. Let some penetrating oil soak in them for a while before you try to take them out. Sometimes they get stuck real tight in that aluminum housing

There is no dipstick. Manual tranmissions usually do not have them. The fill plug is the top one on the passenger side, and the drain plug is the bottom one on the passenger side.

You might find it easier to pull the remove the shifter to fill the trans unless you have a way to pump the fluid as it can be a pain to fill from underneath you just pull the shifter and the fill plug and pour the fluid in the shifter hole until it runs out the fill plg on the tranny the put the fill plug back in as well as the shifter and you are good to go.

in my 88 IROC convert i have installed a t-5 that came out of a 87 IROC, it has that bright orange sticker saying use dextron ATF only. So that i what i use, but my question is, b/c it uses ATF does that mean it is a World Class, i don't know if it is the orginal trans in the 87 or not. But from the above post, if it used ATF it was a WC.....can someone tell me all the deifferences between the two exterally as well as interally so i can tell what i have under there. weither it is the 290 ft/lbs or the 310 ft/lbs T5........i would like to get external diff. so i can tell right away but it will be coming out this summer so i can also do internal. thanks tom

Go onto
http://www.5speeds.com/ Then click on T5 from the menu at top left.
Find the number off the tag on your trans (see site above for location) and type it into the space on the site. It will then tell you if it is a WC or NWC.
