700r4, 4.3 4x4 S10 vs. V8 thirdgen
Is the tailshaft the only external difference between the S10 and the thirdgen 700R4s? The POS 700 in my 89 GMC S15 Jimmy is starting to slip, just like every other 700 that I've ever owned. Since I've already got 2 out back that I ruined in my IROC, I figured I'd rebuild one of those first, swap tailshafts and bolt it in. Is that the only difference, or is the output shaft length different? I'm not really concerned with the differences in the internal guts, because if I rebuild the one out of my IROC, I'll build it with aftermarket parts to make it stand up to towing.

You will need to completely dissasemble the 4X4 transmission so that you can swap output shafts. The 4X4 output shaft is too short and you will have to remove the snap-ring thats in the center of the transmission to remove the shaft. And yes, swap the tailshaft as well.

The fullsizes and 4.3L S-10 trannies will be the same, however, you may run into a speed sensor problem. Alot of the later trucks had a magnetic VSS, which means there is a metal reluctor wheel pressed on to the output shaft. This is no big deal, just smack the metal wheel off, and press your plastic gear on in its place, the speedo clip holes are still there. Or you might get lucky and the one you get will have plastic gears as well.
