S-10 rear end swap
I currently have a 88 camaro sport coupe with the 305 tbi and the stock rear-end which consists of some pretty crappy 2.73 gears. I have a friend who owns a junkyard which has a ton of mid to late 80's S-10 pickups. I know alot of them have a limited slip differential which is what im looking for. I know that the rear ends in the S-10's are the same 7.5 inch 10 bolt that i have in my camaro but what my question is that do the axles on the s-10s have the same number of axle splines and another thing is i do not know how many i have now im my camaro which presents a problem in my rear end search. Most of you are probably wondering why i dont go and buy a new posi differential but i can pick up one of these differentials from the s-10s for 50 bucks and if its gonna work in my car then its goin in. I am on quite a budget here and thats my reasoning on that. So guys im sure someone out there has done/tried this before so if anyone can tell me what years of s-10s to be looking into and if it will work then i would really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Thanks,

You should have 26 spline axles. s-10's around the same year and older will also be the same. Always count to be sure. The S-10's did change to 28 spline but I'm not sure if they changed at the same time as camaros. Try some searches on s-series.org if you are curious about that.

the posi units are interchangeable I put the posi unit from an 84 camaro in my 87 S-10 blazer . up untill 89 - 90 they are 26 spline same as what your camaro should be ... however the S-10 came with the eaton gov-lock units and are P.O.S. slp sells good take out posi units for 99$ if they still have any have your freind locate some 28 spline axles for you. this is a far stronger setup for not much money the gears are also interchageable

The complete diff itself you can't swap but you can use the 7.5" posi/gears from an S-10. The housing and axles are not interchangable with a third gen though.
I think the S-10 upgraded to 28 spline axles around the same time as third gens did. 1990 and up will be 28 spline.

Well felas i decided to go ahead and buy the posi setup from the junkyard. I paid 200 dollars for a rear from a 1986 s-10 and the guy i bought it from just put fresh 3.73 gears in it so i think my purchase was well worth it. I should be installing it this weekend or the next. I also did find the rears in both my camaro and in the s-10 were both 7.625 inch 26 spline rears so i think everything should go smoothly. Well at least im hoping.
