Transmission died, but i want to know why.

Well, i changed my fluid religously (15,000 miles) and never really beat on the transmission. But the last time i changed the fluid it started shifting softer. Even though i had a shift kit. However i noticed it shifting softer way before this happened. But it was a gradual process. So last night i was bored and decided maybe just maybe it would act correctly for some stupid reason. I went around the block and all was good. Then i turnt the corner to get onto my street and all of sudden something vibrated the car and after that i couldn't go anywhere. I could hear a loud whineing sound comeing from down by the transmission. Which sounded like from around the bell housing when i finally decided to crawl under the car. I thought maybe it was just one gear gone. But it's all of them reverse, 1,2,3,4. The whineing sound persists in any gear whether it's park or neutral, or even reverse. I figured maybe the actual gears inside the tranny sheared off or something but when i put it in drive and tried to push the car it wouldn't budge. So i put it in neutral and push and it moved. So i just got it home and hoped it was something easy. People tell me it could be the pump or the torque converter. Anyway i can better diagnose the tranny? What are my options this time around for a transmission? Anyone make a complete 6 speed package for the fbody? Maybe i should go with a pro-built? Thanks for any reply's.

It's possible your filter wasn't put on good the last time you worked on it, and it fell off, and the pump is now sucking air instead of fluid. That would account for the poor performance after it was last worked on, as well as the sudden failure, accompanied by the buzzing.

"The simplest explanation that fits all the facts is usually the right one".
— Occam, ancient Greek philosopher, from the days when a manual trans had an unsynchronized 1st gear

"Eliminate all the explanations that are not possible, then the one that remains must be the right one, however improbable it may seem".
— Sir Arhur Conan Doyle (paraphrased)

I am having the exact same problem with my car and my transmission was rebuilt about 6 months ago w/ a shift kit. other than that the rest of the car is pretty much stock. My brother and I pulled the transmission pan yesterday and there's no metal shavings in the filter or on the magnet and the fluid looks clean and doesn't smell burnt. I talked to the guy that rebuilt the transmission earlier tonight and he said it is probably the torque converter so I will probably be pulling it apart sometime this week to verify this. I've had a few people mention that it could also be the pump too. Anyone know what's up with this??

I tried to find the bill that lists all that was done. I know it has the transgo stage 2? (if that sounds right) shift kit, borg warner bands, the corvette servo, a daaco? converter. The rest like the pump, etc i don't really know about.

I've had a torque converter go out (ground the teeth off), but that was in my Ford Tempo. When the converter went, all gears other than Park suddenly became Neutral, Park was the only one that worked. It sounds like it might be the pump or a combination of different things. I'm no expert, just my two cents, I hope my experiance helps others (It didn't help me it cost 800 bucks, d@amn front wheel drive).

I had the same symptoms as you have. My problem turned out to be my $450 bullet proof 3000rpm flash TCI torque converter. I had the entire xmission rebuilt just to make sure that there wasn't any junk in there. This time I installed a 2500rpm stall made by Dacco.

I had the bullet proof TCI for less than 2000 miles. I did put on about 5 runs down a 1/8 mile strip, but it failed on the highway. I have had the Dacco for about 14000 miles. It seems to function the same now as it did when it was first installed. I am satisfied.
