Front trans seal blew out from pump!!
Hi guys & girls,
I have a question about my car's tranny. Today i was driving along at about 10mph & I manually shifted my 700r4 into 1st gear ( it was in the 3rd gear position already). The tires broke loose & while accelerating with my B.S. = 2.73 gear ratio in the stock disc brakes rear end, I notice a lot of smoke in the back of the car!! At first I thought it was tire smoke, but as I continued to drive the smoke never went away!! I was being attacked by the smoke demons!! So I pulled over & raised the hood trying to find what the hell was burning!! I thought it was a blown coolant line, but everything seemed fine. So I climbed my azz to the ground & tranny fluid was everywhere!! I rebuilt this tranny over the summer (Ive rebuilt 4 trannies for several people the same way & this never happen before) so I dont have a clue to whats going on here. The torque converter is a TCI 3000stall street fighter with lock up. Oh by the way there has been quite a bit of vibration coming from my drive train since I put the 383 & rebuilt tranny in my car. Its kinda like a miss in the 3000 to 6000rpm range. What would cause my front seal to blow out like that? I would really like to know all of the things that would cause this.
thanx in advance

you need to use the front seal retainer. doesn't seem like much but the same thing happened to me. put the retainer on there. no problem since. this was also on 86 (early model) 700R4.

Perhaps your vibration was from the flexplate/Torque converter area and the vibration killed the TC bushing which caused the seal to blow out. Is the vibration always in that RPM range regardless of speed, or is it at a certain speed, and that happens to be the RPMs its turning?
Anyhow, I use loctite on the outside of the seal (where it contacts the pump) and I use the seal retainer like mentioned before.

Flexplate/torque converter vibration?? what would vibrate in this area? All of the bolts are tight, also if the bushing on the torque converter is shot can I physical see it to tell if its bad?
with all of this bad luck with this car I think that's my QUE to put the car up for the winter. What do U guys think??

Re: Front trans seal blew out from pump!!
If something with the torque converter/flexplate is off balance it will wobble as it spins like a tire that has not been balanced.
This wobble will beat the hell out of the front seal bushing because that is where the hub of the converter fits in. Eventually, it will cause the bushing and/or seal to work It's way out of the transmission.
I am having the same issue with an out of box level 3 700R4 I had built but there was no indication of anything awry while it was momentarily working so I think in my case there is another underlying problem.
But for your case, when you mention the car vibrates violently above a certain RPM this is the first thing that comes to mind. Usually a misfire will occur AT a certain RPM and not above a certain RPM.
