9 Bolt Torque Capacity Info And Other Important Info.

The 9 Bolt Rearend is actually called the M78 Rearend. It has been made since the late 60's in Australia by a company called BTR Engineering Ltd. BTR was bought out by Borg-Warner under which company name the rears were produced for our cars. In the last few years Borg-Warner was bought out by Dana Corp. and the rears are still produced by Dana today in the same BTR factory under the Spicer Axles name. These rears are as common in OZ as 7.5" 10 bolts are here (imagine being able to buy a ring & pinion set for a fair price). They were actually used widely in Europe the UK and Japan also.
Here is a link to the Spicer site: www.spiceraxle.com.au/products.htm#srd

The rear is offically rated @ 220 kW = 295 HP
@ 435 Nm = 320 lb/ft
It can support a GVW of 2740 kg = 6041 lbs
That blows the rumor of them being stronger than a Dana 44 all to hell.

Our rears came with a posi called the "Seperated Cone Slip Resistant Differential".
They also make a better version called the Hydratrak SRD but never made axle shafts that would allow us to use it in our case.

So don't believe the hype they are not stronger than a Dana 44. Realistically they are a little stronger than a 4th gen 10 bolt.

Car: 1985 Z-28
Engine: a big one
Transmission: 4 spd auto soon to be a 6 speed
well that is good to hear, i have a 9 bolt in my car right now, but i am going to be building up a dana 44 that i bought for 25 bucks plus shipping.

i mean the dana 44 went into 3/4 ton trucks. i think that it would have to be somewhat strong to go into big trucks like that.

Engine: 355 forged 4 bolt, SuperRam, 58mm t
Transmission: T5, looking for t-56
Only 295hp and 320 lb torque rating? No wonder I keep having problems with mine. I mean,I knew they weren't all that much better than the 10 bolts, but I thought they were rated to handle just a bit more than what you stated.Thnx for the info.Guess I have a new project to add to my car
