rear humming..NOT ANYMORE!
Well i always see post about peoples rear ends making noise,so was mine, not alot but lets just say"Get it fixed"I wasted my rear last night at the track.Man.........The noise that the rear made was horrible. It was a 3.23 posi disc,10 bolt out of a 92. I might go with a 3.42 this time but who knows.......I never changed just the ring and pinion,Anyone that has done this please fill me in on how much of a pain this is going to be,please?

Car: 88 Firebird WS6
Engine: 350 TPI
Transmission: T56
Axle/Gears: 3.42
Prolly be easier just getting a whole 3.42 rear and junking yours. It's real easy to score a 90-92 v6 rear and drop a torsen into it. Alot easier than trying to set up pinion depth and whatnot... Since it sounds like your not-to-sure about rear work this may sound like alot, but someone who knows his stuff can do a ring off ring on a diff carrier and set the backlash in less than 1/2 hour with the rear out of the car.

Hmmmm. too late, I put a 3.42 ring and pinion in yesterday but the spider gears i picked up were too tall.I ended up going back to the performance shop i used to work at and my boss set up the ring and pinion for me.My axles are a little worn so i found a set of new ones.So does anyone know what rear i can get a shorter set of spider gears from, and what exactly is the difference?
