T5 whines at 120km/hr and 80km/hr
I can hear my T5 start to whine at the speeds mentioned above. It was rebuilt about 4000km's ago. Do I need to set the endplay in the tranny?
I have a feeling the tranny shop did a real ****ty job.
Can anyone give me instructions on how to set the endplay with the shims?
Thanks,
S

Steve,
I doubt all the whining noise is from excessive end play on your main and cluster shaft bearings, but if they are not set correctly it's worth a shot in resetting them. The end play should have been set when the trans was rebuilt. Unless they were total morons when they rebuilt it, the end play shouldn't change unless something came loose or you are losing a bearing in the trans.
I could go through the entire procedure of setting the end play of both the main and cluster shaft, but the best advise anyone can give you is to buy the T5 trans video from www.hanlonmotorsports.com It's $17 plus shipping, but worth it weight in gold. If will guide you through the entire tear down and inspection process, then show you how the trans goes together and how to set the end play. It's over two hours long and very detailed. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. I went through my trans using the video and was going to put it on Ebay and sell the video after the trans was done, but decided to keep the video. I'm glad I did. Made a few bucks rebuilding another T5 using the video. Turned out to be a great investment for me.
I also see in your SIG you replaced the fuel pump in your car. I feel your pain!! I did mine a week ago in my camaro. Then 2 days later had to be towed home in my 80 pickup because I lost a mechanical fuel pump in it!! Bad week for fuel pumps I guess.
If you have any other questions I might be able to help you with, please email me.

Thanks for the response man.
I'm pretty sure it's the tranny.
Here's the sympton
If I try and keep the speed steady around 120 to 130ish km/h, it will begin to whine..sortof when the motor is just barely givin power to the driveline (same thing around 80km/h in forth). When I back off or give it as little as say 15% throttle the noise totally disappears. This is why I'm thinking tranny. My U-joints are probably original on the car (185,000km's). Do you think they could be causing the noise? There isn't any play in them (that I can tell anyways).
hmmm,
Your thoughts are appreciated. And yes, those f-in fuel pumps!!

Steve, Ok from what you just described I would also suspect rear end noise. Differential gears will whine and the noise is transferred up the hollow driveline and it sounds like it's coming from the trans. I have an Astro van and the rear whines on power, and growls on decelleration. Yours could be gears or pinion bearing. Hopefully someone with more rear diff. experience will read this and add their thoughts. Also a dumb question for you, have you checked the fluid level in the T5 lately? Around here I've seen more T5's die from lack of lube than anything else.
Good luck-Dan

The fluid was my first guess. So I checked it and it was fine. I even added half a litre for fun. The fluid looks nice and red too. I've never chanced the bearing you speak of in the rear. Is it located where the driveshaft yoke meets the differential housing? If so, I'll be that's it.
Do you have any experience changing the bearing? and do you know if it requires taking apart the differential?
Once again, your help is appreciated..

Steve, No I don't have experience changing the pinion bearing. You might try a search on that subject, then if you don't find your answer, post with a new subject concerning the rear end. Hopefully this will get people with rear end experience to answer your questions.
