I need some help, Zexel torsen carrier question

I have a 91 Z28, I have a new set of richmond gear 3.73's on my series 2 carrier. This has a thick ring gear. I want to buy a Zexel torsen unit. I need to know if they have a series 2 torsen carrier out there. The part number I have for the zexel unit is GM #12471372. Will my gears fit on this carrier? I don't want to buy a new set of gears when I already have a good set!

I found a web site that had that part # and it said lower ratios numerically. I have only seen series 3 carriers though.

Those gears will not fit a 3-series carrier. This is the main reason not to buy those special gears, but rather use a spacer.

I have a ring gear spacer laying around if worse came to worse. I also have a set of 3.73 gears in an S-10 that I could use. The gears just have high miles. I just want to make sure that there is no series 2 zexel units first before tearing into something else.

jonarotz,
Yes..........there are 2 series Zexel Torsen 7.5/7.625 10 bolt posi carriers. I have a brand new one that I can sell you. I bought it from Sean Campbell (who used to be on this board?) and came to find out it was a 2 series (I needed a 3 series). Well because I had such a run-around getting it from him after he got my payment, I decided I didnt want any more hassles and shelved it. It is a 28 spline carrier.......like I said previously it is brand new - never mounted. When you stand it up against a comparable 3 series carrier the mounting flange surface the ring gear mounts to is about .290" lower. Measure the thickness of the ring gear spacer you have.......it should be around .290"

I currently have no use for this Zexel Torsen carrier. PM me if your interested.

Mike
