transmission recomendation
Since I cant use my 700r4 from my v6 on the 350 that i am swapping in, i need to find a new tranny, but i cant decide witch one to chose. I intend to be have around 400hp/400lb.ft. so i definatly need a durable tranny. Right now i am looking at either a 700r4, t56, turbo350, turbo400, 4L60, 4L80, or a muncie-22.
I would like to have it in manual, my car came in auto but i also have a scrapped 88 s-10 so i could just swap most of the parts, it has a hydro clutch. This would be very time consuming but worth it in the end i think.
But i am also working with a budget so i have to watch my spendings.
The car will be street/strip so i dont think the turbo350/400 would work well in my application.

are there any gm transmissions you aren't considering? the m22 isn't really a canadate ,and if you had one sell it to someone that needs one for a resto, or for what one would cost you you'd be able to buy most of a t56. what torque arm you have? a th400 would be my choice if you had the right torque arm other wise i'd go with a th350. if your car is light i'd consider a glide and a brake, for that matter since it'd see the strip i'd consider a brake for it.

well my friend rebuilds m22 so thats why this was an option, my car is an 87 camaro, and it will be used for street also, so a glide isnt really an option. I like the th350 and 400 because there are many parts available, but i like the 4L60, 4L80, 700r4 because of their overdrive, as i will need that for street. I have found the most parts for the 700r4, but if i put performance parts into the rebuild of the 700r4 would it be able to withstand up to 450lb.ft.

There are tons of "performance" parts available for the 700R-4/4L60 that will definatly give you a tranny capable of the power output you seek. The reason 700's have the "black eye" that they do, is that most places want an arm and a leg to rebuild one because of demand. There isn't much demand for 350's, because almost any Bubba can do them in there driveway. And then when you cough up the money that they want, 50% of the places that are building them are incompetent. And of course, when it breaks, it was your fault for "racing" it.
I use the trans shop down the street from my dealership as "leverage". When somebody wants me to do a transmission for them, I call up the trans shop and then do it for a few hundred less. Do you know how much they want for a "stock" rebuild for a 3rd gen? $1200!!! Do you know what kind of tranny you can get for $1200? Ask Dana at Probuilt, and it won't be no "stock" rebuild. Dana doesn't pay me to sell his product, I am a transbuilder myself and I am familiar w/ the parts and procedures he uses and I like what I see.
Anyhow, back to the original question, w/ the proper parts, and put together properly, I think the 700 is a GREAT tranny to use. It can be made tough, you'll have the overdrive, and you won't need an external controller like the 4L80-E. Need I say more?
