Drive shaft question for T56 / FORD 9" combo
Hi,
Does a ford 9" push the drive shaft further forward?
I purchased a drive shaft from Spohn sized for a ford 9" / T56 combo which I am temporarily using with my stock rear. I see almost 2" of yoke sticking out of the T-56. IF I raise the front of the car oil leaks out the tailshaft housing and if I grab the yoke and yank it around I can just barely detect some movement.
Does this sound like a yoke not in far enough problem or just a bad seal?
Thanks

Well, the F*rd 9" has a ring gear that's about 1½" bigger than the 7.5"; so if the wheelbase is the same, then the ring gear center is in the same place, so the edge of the ring gear is ¾" forward of where it was with the 7½", so if the 9" pinion is the same length as the 7½", it's at least that far forward from where it was... so yes, 2" doesn't surprise me at all, that sounds believable.
2" of exposed yoke is about reasonable also, I would guess there's 1½" or so stock. But you should not be able to move it, dump fluid out, etc. You T-56 may need an extension housing bushing.

Thanks RB83L69, good info.
When you say "may need an extension housing bushing" is this a modification to the transmission or something aready there that may need replacing?
Thanks,

It's a bushing that looks just about like a cam bearing. it presse into the extendion housing which is the rearmost case oiece of the trans, The driveshaft yoke should fit more or less tightly in it. It's a fairly normal wear thing, sounds like yours is worn.

I have had two 4th Gens with 9" Moser rears and T56s...both had stock length Lingenfelter aluminum driveshafts. I have heard of some people having to modify the driveshaft for their 9" swaps, but I didn't.
