Axle/Gears: Ford 9"/31 spline spool/4.86
GM's number series. Originally they had a TH350. It was updated to a 700R4 (700 series, 4 speed). It's been updated again to 4L60E (4 speed, 60 has something to do with torque, electronic controlled)
The tranny in my truck is a 4L80E. It's an electronic version of the TH400 with an overdrive. The "80" means it can handle a lot more torque that the "60" model but the tranny is completely different.
The smaller 4 speed auto used in cars like the Buick GN is the 200-4R. 200 series 4 speed. Much better gear ratio than the 700R4.

Gm's interesting Id's to the trannys.
4L60 is for the 4 speeds, laterial mount, 60 is for the torque rating and may be in Neuton meters(metric)...... the "E" will indicate electronic.
4T60E would be a "transverse" or FWD tranny.
There is now a 4L65E which is an updated 4L60E (duh!)
Most folks refer to the 4L80E as a T-400 with over drive and electronic controlled.
There is so many differences in the two trannys and few parts interchange
