Fluid leaking from breather atop my 700-R4

Dont laugh too hard but me and a friend rebuilt my 700-R4 and followed every step according to our book Haynes Automatic Transmission Overhaul. After starting the engine it started leaking fluid from the top, it only had 5 quarts in it so it was not over filled. We looked and watched it coming from the top plastic hose :breather: We did not rebuild the entire pump body because the transmission was not bad before our attempted rebuild. It had exactly 310 miles on it and was 6 damn days over the 1 year warranty when my flexplate broke and caused my torque converter to wobble enough to break the **** on the pump. Since the pump wasnt pumping I had no gears and opted to have it checked out by the shop that sold it to me THE TRANNY DOCTOR in Reno NV. He tore it apart and tried charging me 1499.00 to rebuild it after telling me there was nothing wrong except the broken pump rotor and some burn marks left on the band.

I bought the damn transmission from them BRAND NEW NO CORE for 899.00 WITH a torque converter, and now they wanted 1499.00 to put my "undamaged" transmission back together!

Sheeeesh

Anyway, I followed the book step by step, I purchased a rebuild kit minus clutches, a 10 vane pump rotor, and a new band. Those were the only changes. I'm looking in the book and in the troubleshooting section it says

1. Check the oil pump for the chamfer in the oil pump body bieng to large.

2. Check the valve body for a stuck TV limit valve.

3. Check the fluid for excessive fluid level.

OK....... 2 and 3 I can understand, however number 1 has me completly baffled. There are no details on what a chamfer is in the entire pump or how to check it. The check ***** in the valve body could be wrong I suppose but could that cause the problem?

Somebody shed some light please. My current money situation will not allow me to purchase a pro built transmission (I swear I'll get one someday) for at least another 6 months but I would like to get this trans working until then.

Thanks

What year is the unit you are working on? If it is the 1987 & up and you used the 1982-1986 front pump body gasket, then the possibility for a leak can occur. The pump body has to be in very good condition to be reused. I would have someone who is familiar with this unit help you out on this. If the 2-4 band had burn streaks, then examine the drum closely where the band rides and put a straight edge on the drum to see that it is flat (not dished). If it is dished replace it. If you have any questions on this, please call me at 800 7763288 M-S 10-6 PST.

I'm using a 91 700r-4 and I'll check the gasket ASAP, thank you very much and I look forward to doing business with you someday soon. Any other suggestions?
