T-5 to T-5 swap

i have two t-5s, ....one on my 87 camaro .....and one on my long to be restored 67 mustang......my camaros t-5 is starting to clunk, its just about dead, from the torque of the 383 currently residing in front of it......now the logical thing to do of course is to get a t-56 but until then its my daily drive...and i dont have the money now for a full t-56 swap....so lets cut to the chase....could i swap the bell housing and slap the ford t-5 into the camaro?, are the splines the same size?.....i could take both out and check, but if im wrong, i just spent a whole day taking them for nothing.........thanks

If I recall correctly, the Ford T-5 input shaft sticks out farther than the GM version (like 1.5" to 2" worth) and also has a different spline count.
The output shaft also has a different spline count, and although you can get a yoke conversion from a driveshaft shop, I don't think it's worth it.

My $0.02 is, just bring the T-5 down to a _good_ tranny shop, talk with the (probably 1) guy that rebuilds them a lot, and get him to do it for ya.

I bought a rebuild kit from Hanlon, brought everything down to Mike (my tranny guru now!) and he put it all together for me for about $300, total. Add the cost of the kit, about $250, and I got a warranted rebuilt tranny for less than $600, including tax!!

Hope this helps ya!

You could rebuild the trans in your car. I believe www.5speeds.com (or www.5speed.com) has teh rebuild kits for about $200 (its been a few years since i did mine). As long as nothing is bent or broken, they come out good as new. Make sure the front of the case isnt leaking from the mainshaft or countershaft...that means the case is stretched and you need a new case (one of the most common problems)
Email me if you need rebuild advice...mine has been going for 70k miles without a problem
