Feels like I'm in neutral!
I have a 700r4 and when I'm taking off from a stop (with the shifter in OD) it feels like the car is in neutral. With the shifter in any other gear, it feels fine. Also, while going down the road at highway speeds, I can shift into OD and maintain speed (so the gear is somewhat engaged) but if I go to accelerate quickly, it feels like I'm in neutral again. Is my tranny dying? Thanks,
Cole

Car: 1986 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
Engine: 305 Tuned Port Injection
Transmission: The famous 700R4
Axle/Gears: No idea
Repeat all the test with fluid at FULL mark ( no "ADD", no at middle).
Then you can make the question: Is my tranny dying?.

Denis V.

Car: 85 IROC
Engine: LB9
Transmission: 700R4
Axle/Gears: 3.42
So what is happening is you step on the gas and the engine revs up but you dont go anywhere?
I can't vouch for that when starting..being in OD or in standard drive should make no difference off the line the 700R4 should be starting in 1st gear either way.
By highway speeds, do you mean above 70mph and then you feed it throttle and it feels like the car just drops into neutral?

Yes, when I go to take off from a stop, the engine revs as if it were in neutral, and the car doesn't move. I thought the same thing at first about the transmission starting in 1st (from a stop) regardless of which forward gear that the shifter is in, but I'm not too familiar with the guts of an automatic transmission. I'm not sure if having the shifter in a different gear than OD causes the clutches to work differently or not. I can take off in any gear other than OD. As far as the highway speed thing, I can be going at any speed that the tranny would normally be in overdrive, and cruise at speed. But if I step on the gas, the engine revs, and I don't accelerate. It feels like the car's not in gear. If you need any more info, let me know.

I'm just throwing this out, but it almost sounds like the shifter is out of adjustment. It could actually be in neutral and indicate OD. Like I said, just throwing that out there.

I also thought that it may have been a linkage adjustment problem at first, but I don't really think that it is. The reason I say that is that I can maintain speed in OD, so the transmission has to be in gear. I can even accelerate very slowly, but if I give it too much gas, I'm back to the slipping.
