i'd go with 3.42's for daily driving with a 2.95 first gear ratio(t-5) it still gives you good launches and decent gas mileage...............

3.42's work better with 5-speeds.

I would go with no less than a 3.23 at bare minimum for performance applications. If you have a stick a 3.42 is a good choice, where a 3.23 is good for an auto but 3.42's either way don't hurt for either. 3.73 is fairly high and as long as you can live with the gas guzzling not a major loss as as a 4.10.

I'm running 3.73s with a 700R4 overdrive auto and its awesome - about 2600 rpm on the highway doing around 70mph. I'm planning on a 5-speed soon too which should bring my cruise rpm down. The 5-speeds came with 3.08s stock and the auto's came with 2.73s (i'm talking low-perf. models) so that reflects a little where the ratios sit.

tyler

I would not go with 3:73s on a stock TPI for 1/4 gains. 3:42s would be better. But if you plan for mods later on for higher rpm breathing, then go for the 3:73s now, so you don't waste your money.

With the G92 you could get the 3.45:1 BW rear with the 5-speed.

i also have 3.73 and 700r4 around 2600rpm around 60 or 65, uses about 1/8 tank in about 25 miles, thats not bad at all to me whatsoever, im used to older trucks, so,,,, and the 67-72 came std with 3.73, so yay... 3.73 is my gear

good luck with whatever you do.

The tech info is not very clear. It does not say posi or not, unless (G92) means posi??? Also they do not have all the models year and engines size info. For 86 they do not have info on the 2.8 bird.

I would like an easy swap 3.42 posi into my bird.

G80 should be the posi RPO and G92 was the performance axle ratio package, that actually was more of a 'performance package'.

For long clutch life, you need a minimum of a 10 to 1 first gear ratio. 2.95 x 3.42 = 10.09. 2.95 x 3.73 = 11.00. If you have a choice of transmission gear ratios, then have the biggest spread between 1st & 2nd with each gear thereafter getting closer till you reach 1 to 1 (direct). This has worked very well in the past, when I did ST-10's, Muncies, T-10's & others when trying to achieve long clutch life, better et's, & more mph in the quarter mile. I hope this helps some!

anyone know off hand what year n models had or came with the 3.42 in the v6 package.

like i said the tech info section is no help, as it does not state posi or not and it does not have the v6 info for every year.
