How to build a bulletproof 700R4? Dana? Leo?

Hey guys,

I've got a friend that has an '89 IROC that can't seem to keep a tranny in it. He's been thru like 10+ trannys and something has to be seriously wrong with the way they're built. The last time they built it up and put a manual reverse pattern valve body in it and that lasted him longer than any previous one did but still yet it broke. I'm not sure how it broke exactly or anything like that but I assume it's the typical crappy rebuilding and stuff because it always had the hard bang 1-2 shifts and all the other bad things. He also uses the car to tow a 16ft boat and is generally someone who you would say is "rough" on the car.

Here's what we have basically..... '89 Iroc, 350 tuned port thats been redone and is putting out probably 325-350hp, 3.08 rearend. The present 700 case is now junk so I know we will need a new one to start the buildup. So what all should be done to be sure he doesn't break this thing again? I know Trans-Go and all that stuff, but what about other internal components, and torque convertor? I also know that we should use the '88 up case. So what does everyone think we should do to build a bulletproof tranny?

Thanks for your help

Make sure you have someone who is familiar with the 700R4 transmission and Trans-Go, to help you out on the rebuild. I would use the ATSG book for basic information & updates. The rebuild kit I carry for the HD rebuild should do fine. Depending on what he tows, he might be better off with the Continental 11" SHD torque converter with non-lockup, (low stall, high torque multiplier). I have used this TC in the past with much success, a slight loss in gas mileage on the freeway, but better around town and easier on the driveline. It is about 10-12 lbs. lighter too. There is much more. Let me know?
