Are all 4-speed autos 700r4?

Just curious.. are "Camaro/Firebird 4 speed automatic transmission" and "700r4" synonymous, or are there different stock automatic trannies?

In a third gen, yes. It's either a 700R4 or the renamed 4L60E.

There are other 4 speed autos. My truck has a 4L80E and some of the other GM cars have a 200-4R.

So there is absolutely no difference between the 700r4 and the 4l60e? Why did they change the name for no reason?

Unless someone positively corrects me, it was called 700r4 through 92 and 4L60 in 93 and then went to 4L60E in 94

The 4L60E saw limited use in '93. While the mechanicals of the 4L60E are pretty much the same as the 700/4L60 they do not function identically. One difference is that in the 700 when you put it in any of the manual gears the Overrun Clutch comes on while in the 4L60E it isn't until you go to Man2 or 1. Also on the '95 and up L/U is PWM controlled.

Like he said, the 4L60E is different. The 4L60 was mainly a name change. All of you forgot about the Turbo trans am in 1989. It didn't have a 700r4 tranny and was a 4 speed auto. th200r4
The 700r4 went thought lots of upgrades over the years, almost every year is a little bit different.
