how am i supposed to make this work?

ok i know that this is probably the wrong place to put this post but i need help from anyone that can offer it. so im doing a tpi swap to my 90rs. harness is diff so i order one from summit. well now i need an ecm i didnt know that they were diff, well i knew but i didnt know they were that diff. so now i need an ecm and ive called all the salvage places near by and none have ecms. i called thirdgen rescouces and they dont have any ecms either. so right now im up a creek. ive been with out a car for threee weeks now. if anyone can help me locate an ecm i would be very grateful. by the way i have a harness and ecm out of a 87 tpi
and i have a harness and ecm out of a 90rs. i also called local part stores and they have the ecms with out proms and i know i need that. and if i purchase an ecm from them where can i get an inexpesive prom for a 90 tpi camaro. lol. well thanks to anyone that can help me.

you need an ecm and prom out of the same year as the tpi intake was. if you took the tpi off an 87 then you need an 87 ecm with an 87 prom. because of the differences in tpi. they switched to speed density instead of mass air in i believe 89 or 90 i can't ever remember. so a 90 prom wont work with an 87 ecm.
you can always get a new ecm and get an aftermarket prom also.

i think i misread your post but i'll leave this up until you say otherwise

What is your location, I can tell you where to get one if I knew
where you were at. The prom is easy, just call a Chevy dealer,
they cost like 35 or 40 dollars or something like that.

Jet (and all the other "off-the-shelf") eproms are a complete waste of money. Better off with just the stock eprom, because that is what those Jet eproms really are (with a dash more spark and fuel...NOTHING that will give any additional performance).

A stock eprom/memcal will cost around $40-60 depending if it's MAF or SD. And you can get the SD ECM at a wrecking yard for under $50 .... just say it's for an early 90s 3.1 V6 Cavalier/Sunbird.

The dealership that quoted $800 "must have seen you coming".

But if you AREN'T going to learn how to burn eproms, then just stick with the stock Memcal and use "mechanical methods" to tune. Mechanical Methods are not the right way to tune an engine but they do a hell of a lot more than an "off-the-shelf" eprom. BTW, you'll probably spend as much on "mechanical methods" and still not get the performance or gas mileage that you'd get from tuning your own eprom.

The money you save in gas in just one year pays for all the equipment, and then you can save FOREVER. But it's your money, do as you wish.

order a stock prom from www.gmpartsdirect.com with a part number, you can get it shipped to you for less than 50.00 and i am sure someone will have you the part number as mne is SD, my prom will not fit a MAF system so my part number will not work.

Also look in the tech section of this site, it tells what ECM service tag you need and can be found in many cars and only needs a prom change. Again my spare ECM will not fit your MAF system so i can't be of help there either.

I am running parts from a 1985 TPI parts with a 90-92 wiring harness and ECM so it can be done. You can get a cold start injector plug for the manifold and the fuel rail so that you can delete these from your system.

Well, if you are wanting SD, then i have a spare ECM to fit. SD ECMs have three plugs on the wiring harness and the MAF ECMs only have two. If you are interested in the extra ECM that i have just let me know and we can work something out.

Since your car is a 90 RS, do you have VATS? you will need this to hook up to the ECM and wiring harness or you will have to get someone to reburn the factory prom with VATS deleted so that the prom will work.

Gruvin is right. Just block of the Cold Start Injector, get the 1227730 SD ECM (they are a dime a dozen because they are the same ECM as early 90s 3.1 V6 Cavlier/Sunbirds - go to a "U Pick A Part" and find one, unless you live in some remote neck of the woods). And the Memcal you want is the AUJP1615, can be ordered in a couple days from almost ANY GM Dealership. I paid $65.00 when I bought my spare a year ago.

Go here http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28/ecm_swap_730/ to see how to do a MAF 165 Swap to a 7730 Swap. They even show how to convert the cable.

ok i called a dealer that is a bout 60 miles away they were the only ones that new what an eprom or memcal was. but they want the vin#. so if anyone can help me at this point i would be really greatful. i need the vin for a 90 305 tpi auto tranny. or are we not allowed to ask for vin#s. well no junk yards here have any tpis so i cant go get one outta those. and my donor car was an 87 so that would defeat the pupose i need the vin# for that car. and i tried that number glenn but they said taht didnt find it. could it be another?

madmonkey, where the heck do you live? $800 for a prom? holy crap. your local dealer must be selling new camaros for a million dollars. i bought a brand new ecm from auto zone for 80 bucks and a prom from fastchip for $185. ya i know some might say the ecm from autozone is junk but i needed one that day and they had one. it works so thats all that counts. i did buy about 3 diffrent chips from the dealer. what a nighmare. i literally have to look at their computer and show them what i want because they are so stupid. one guy tells me that there is no chip for a 91350 with tpi.

GO FIND ANOTHER DEALER!!!!

The VIN# only contains the "engine type". It has no info on the "tranny" or "rear axle" within the code. While that is NOT a GM Part#, it IS the Broadcast Code which any GOOD dealership should cross link to your ECM.

Go to this link for a 305 Auto TPI bin AWFU5509 WITHOUT 16" Tires

http://holman.cs.uml.edu/~sdurphey/b...b.cgi?BCC=awfu

Or for a 305 Auto TPI with 16" tires AXXF3076

http://holman.cs.uml.edu/~sdurphey/b...b.cgi?BCC=axxf

I recommend the AXXF3076 because the 305 autos with 16" tires don't have a speed limiter!

Print this off, as it even has the proper GM part number. BUT GO TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP!
