Wells MAF almost works on 85!!
I finally got the 85 running again today after removing and cleaning all of the plugs. The car ran good but threw a code 33. The original 85 MAF worked on the 88 gta. I pulled it off and put it back on the 85 and got no codes. I put the wells on the 88 and it ran good, but is still throwing the same code 34 that it was throwing with the 85 MAF and the original MAF.
Anyway, long story short, the wells seems to work on the 85 but it throws a code. I just figured some might want to know this.

Jim,
You do realize that the '85 TPI MAF used a frequncy modulated digital signal, while the '86-'89 TPI MAFs used a purely analog voltage signal, right?
You'll have a very hard time making a Wells SU-145 (or any other analog MAF) to work on your '85. They may offer a replacement digital MAF for your car, or maybe not. I know they offer a digital for the Buick 231s with turbos, but they are a different size.

Vader, I'm swapping to a 165 ECM very, very soon, so I did this just as an experiment. I know that when others such as Mike Davis swapped to a 165 ECM, he was able to keep using the original MAF with the new computer, and my experiment with my MAF on the GTA supports that. I figured I'd try it the other way around, and I'll say that the car ran real well with the Wells, although I did not drive it. It idled and had good throttle response dispite the code.
But, now we know. You can use an 85 MAF on a newer car, but not vise versa. I think this is good info, because the 85 MAF seems to be substantially more reliable than the newer ones (the wire is thicker for one thing), and if somebody is in a situation where they are unable to buy a Wells, at least they can get an 85 and get the extra reliability.

Jim,
I hadn't caught the part about the 1227165 swap. The older F-M MAF may generate a signal that varies in effective power (and voltage) for the analog input on the newer ECM, but I would be very careful about how accurately it is scaled and spanned to the requirements of the newer ECM. There is an input buffer on the newer ECM, and it may effectively filter some of the F-M contingent of the older MAF output, but I would be suspicious about the accuracy of the singal. A quick voltmeter test after the buffer would be the real test.
