Bosch mass airflow

Bosch mass airflow
I took my mass airflow sensor off today and broke the little metal blade in the inside of the sensor. I ordered a new sensor and it has fins in the sensor but the one I broke had these fins ground off . Picture attached. Why would the previous owner do that? Thank you Bill retired old Navy Chief.
If you look at the inside you will see the fins were ground off.

Re: Bosch mass airflow
The screens and cooling fins were removed to improve airflow through the mass airflow sensor in a misguided attempt to get massive power gains because the MAF was choking the engine to death. In reality a modified MAF gains you less than a handful of HP compared to a stock MAF and can cause drivability problems. If your engine actually needs more airflow because the MAF is choking it out then your engine needs a higher flowing MAF sensor and the ECU calibrated to match it or the MAF needs to be eliminated and Speed Density tuning used instead.
Mass Airflow sensors are precision measurement instruments that shouldn't be *****-nilly messed with. The screens are flow straighteners that allow the actual sensor part to get consistent airflow across it so it gives accurate readings and the cooling fins keep the electronics inside the sensor from cooking to death.

Thank you for the information. I have a maf coming tomorrow, hopefully this will work. This has the screens and fins. What drivability issue would a bad maf cause?

Re: Bosch mass airflow
Good afternoon, I got a replacement MAF sensor remanufactured and installed it start right up but after a minute it stall in part. I put it in drive but it stalled. I think I may have to convert it like the one I replaced by taking the screens off and grinding the fins. Would you recommend I try that?

Re: Bosch mass airflow
All mine are screen and finless, no issues.
stock to mild tpi are ok leaving them in

Re: Bosch mass airflow
Good evening, thanks for the response. I took the screens off and ground the fins down. I was able to get it to run a little better. It idles around 600 rpm but does drop to about 450 but kickbacks up to 600. I think the accel ram air tunnel is the reason I believe the maf sensor had to be modified. I’m going to have it looked at this week to see what else can be done to get it to idle and run better. I figure plugs, wires, rotor cap and timing would help.
