LT1 Intake Swap Update

It's done!!!!!! The Intake is finally on and wired up. But, unfortunately due to a blizzard over here in CT, it hasn't been fired up yet (starting cars in a closed garage is not a good idea). So I'll have to wait a day. But until then here's a semi-final pic of the engine bay. I don't know if this happened to anyone else doing the swap but my TB hit the coolant lines on the drivers side of the manifold. Thankfully I'm running a plate style nitrous system, and as you can see, it gives me the extra clearance I need. I had a little trouble getting the stock TB boot to the MAF to fit correctly and make such a shrap descent but it eventually worked out fine. Also, I had the worst time trying to get a distributor. Out of 6 distributors, only one fit right. 6!!!!! My stock one was too big (I knew that was coming). 2 from the parts yard were rusted solid or otherwise unuseable. One remanufactured one wouldn't even thread the cap screws! And the last remanufactured one wouldn't even fit the hole!! I finally returned that one to get a remanufactured one that fit and the cap screwed into. With my luck it won't fire.

I know it looks a little rag tag, but it works. Well, at least we'll see tomorrow.

Here the pic of the TB. Without the N2O plate it would swing back and hit the coolant hose.

You might be able to take a heat gun and gently warm the outlet of the plastic filter housing and angle it down some to help get the kink out of the duct. I know that's a detail and you're still working on the bigger stuff, but it's just an idea for later. Looks good. Can't wait to see your results.

Car: 1997 Jeep Wrangler
Engine: 4.0L
Transmission: 5 speed
Axle/Gears: 8.8 rear, 4.56 gears, 4:1 transfer
The 90° hose end on the drivers side needs to be cut down as short as possibe to clear. I mean leave the 90° but shorten the short end as much as you can, that's what I had to do. I also had an aftermarket TB.

Looks great. I like how you mounted the remote T-stat where the A/C would have been.

Ron, is it me or is your combo not living it up? My Car runs a 14.8 with exhaust and no traction.

I've had other people tell me the same thing, but I don't know how to get more out of the combo I'm running. Also I've only been down the track 6 times. This past year was my first year.

Any suggestions?

Thank you all. Yeah I thought I should use that old A/C bracket for something. It came in pretty handy. And Jza, I'll definitely try your suggestion and heat the box to get the kinks out later. My only concern is that the portion I need to bend is so thin and narrow now, too much bending will cut off flow altogether. As far as chip go mine is stock at the moment. I'm debating whether or not to get this dyno tuned now and run stock heads and cam with the LT1 and N20, or try an wait on it and get a good heads cam combo and then get it dyno tuned. The only problem is that I don't realkly have the cash to get the aftermarket stuff anytime soon. Any thoughts?

I dont know, 20x rwhp also looks a little meek for the combo you've got So i dont think its in the launch.
Do you have stickies?
Maybe you've got bad compression or something.
Are you running all synthetics ?
When was the last time you had a tune up.
Something is eating at your power.. It is a 350 right ? Even a 305 should be faster..
You're better off asking someone more hardcore than me. All i know is that it doesnt add up.
Post a query on the boards and we'll see.
Sorry

Thanos.

p.s. Prom?

I'm guessing it's a 305 since he's running 19lbs injectors.

Good point. 24 = 350?
But still weak times. Tune up

L98 350s came with 22lbs injectors, LT1 350s came with 24lbs injectors. And yes the times are weak and so is the hp.

Ya know, to solve your air duct problem, I would try a setup from a Trans Am or GTA... yeah its a little bit more restrictive, but it will give you direct airflow, and with a little modification, it will do just as good!

It's been a while since last tune-up. Couple years or more. I have stock plugs. Those SLP headers are gonna make it real hard to get to the plugs without taking the headers off. Thats why I haven't changed them any earlier.

I have been running my street tires. Rear end oil has never been changed, stock prom.

As I said I am in the process of the LT1 swap as soon and it gets here. I am goning with an LT1 cam also. Might go with 3.73 gears and maybe a 3000 stall. I am going to have to get a chip from Ed Wright. I also want to get 1.6 RR, but don't know how much money I'll have to spend yet. I want to do it all right now cause if I do something down the road, I'll have to have the chip changed again.

Trouble

Ok guys, I've run into some trouble. The car turns over but doesn't idle. It shuts off right away. I think my timing is WAAAAYYY off. I had to change over to the 87 and up setup so maybe the distributor is off a tooth.....or a few teeth. Also, does my remote coil have to be grounded to something? What else could cause this? I don't think it has anything to do with fuel because we played with the timing and cranked to motor a bunch of times. It turns over everytime then dies immediately. Any Ideas?

TPS is fine and it wasn't changed during the swap since I kept my stock TB. It ran fine before. I'm thinking timing since I had to change distributors.

My timing was WAY out of wack when I did mine. I finally ended up putting the timing light on it while my wife cranked it over, just to get it close. Worked like a charm. Good thing Fluiddamper puts marks all the way around Looks good. I never thought about putting the thermostat on an angle like that.

Good luck..

Looks good, your starting problem definitly sounds like timing, so check that bad boy out, when you set it make sure you disable the computer advance, or you'll set the timing way retarded. In my 89 Firebird its just one wire, on my cutlass i have to ground the ALDL.
If you don't like the way the intake tract has to jump down from the MAF, take a look at the Firebird set up, it runs over to the passenger side instead of straight out, and the MAF is around the bend (perpendicular to the TB) so you can just rotate it a bit and lose that sharp bend.

RCR...how far off was your timing? Was your distributer like 90 degrees in the wrong direction or even put in backwards? Also just to clarify.... its Clockwise=advance.... Counter-clockwise=retard.......correct?

IT's ALIVE!!!!!!!! BWAHAHAHAHA

ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!! ITS ALIVE!!!!! Count one more running LT1 L98 on the list. The problem has been solved. Yes, embarassingly, Mark bearing witness to this, stupid me didn't wire the distributer right. Now with that squared away it runs like a champ. To much ice to take her on the road tonight (and the damn timing light i bought doesn't work ). Tomorrow I hope to accomplish more and give you guys some seat of the pants results. Thank you all for the help, I'm ready to Rock n roll now.

OH YEAH MAN!!!...I'm definitely a pike fan. I'm there just about every weekend during the summer. Gimme an Email or somthing. You should join the Connecticut F-Body Association (CTFBA). Go to http://www.ctfba.com Maybe if we gang up on him we can get new CT resident Andris Skulte to bring his twin turbo Z to the Pike too!

Ok guys, I took the car on the road a bit and it feels great. I still haven't accurately adjusted my timing yet since my timing light was bad. I'm anxious to get the car to a track or dyno to get some numbers, we all know that the seat of the pants dyno is not exactly a tuned piece of equipment . Do you guys have any suggestions as to what I should set my timing to? Just want to get some input.
