I 'need' 100 more hp ...
i got beat this morning by an eagle talon. it was clear he out accelerated me at highway speed, maybe a turbo. doesnt matter. the talon is about 1000lbs lighter than my car.
i'm guessing it took him taking about 8 seconds from the time i noticed him on my right to pull ahead. i know that my car is somewhere in the 375-400hp range because my 0-60 times are sub-5.
So my question is, what mods could I add to get another 100hp? I really like DIY.
current setup: ported 083 stock heads, stock valves, ported plenum and intake gasket matched, stock runners, custom chip, hooker headers, hooker 3" exhaust.

Re: I 'need' 100 more hp ...
Some talons are heavy but with AWD they launch nice. The fastest ones are about 15 flat factory. But they can be modded very easy and be quick with a little more boost.
No way your car is 375-400hp with your mods and a stock cam, probably closer to 40HP over stock if you ported things correctly. Also if you were already 400hp no way you could get another 100 with a stock TPI without forced induction.
Probably want to look into a head, cam or intake swap and retune.

I guess I should be satisfied knowing that I COULD build it, but there's no way without artificial methods, and just be happy with the power the motor makes by itself.

Re: I 'need' 100 more hp ...
Correct, could build it. You can have another 100 hp with new heads and much bigger cam. However tpi as it is from the aftermarket likely wont do it. Maybe a first tpi, maybe a heavily ported siamesed tpi but that all costs more than a hsr or single plane efi lol
Say you did have 280-300 whp as it sits... A good 350 can easily make 380-400 all motor just need to turn it up

Re: I 'need' 100 more hp ...
I use the car to drive to work daily, and I'm more than happy with it. Gets good mileage too, ~19 overall.
Cost was only $1500 to add the cam, headers and exhaust. Did all the other work myself to the 100K mile stock 5.7.
Well, many thanks for the replies. It feels good to have a car that is faster than at least 90% of everyone elses, along with the knowledge it was DIY and that its just another 'lowly' SBC. I suppose the moral of the story is just be careful when messing around with japanese turbos!

You are probably making similar power to this car

I don't understand why you say that about "if all things are equal he still wins". By that logic, you should have a turbo, since the Talon does.
100 shot will not affect drive ability, gas mileage, etc and give you MUCH more power when you need it.
It's not "artificial" when you're spraying, trust me.

Stock for stock though a 1990 turbo talon will take a thirdgen 5.0

Or a junkyard 4.8/5.3 LS with a 76mm turbo. Forget big blocks unless its for nostalgia or all out crazy (1000+hp) builds.

Talon vs camaro is two different cars made for different markets. Face it are cars are slow, with out straying away From O.E. your car will stay that way. The cheapest way is nitrous a stock car can take 150 shot all day. And your intake prevents any quick high speed fun.

nuff said
and who cares? it was a talon, if you are that hard up about it change the car. sure some imports are quick and civics too, but they are just that a civic... my girlfriend drives a nice one everyday...
if you want to go fast with these cars, drop a ton of money into them, because once you make the engine fast, then you need to beef the tranny, then you need a better rear cause you don't get any traction with street tires and add drag radials and blow it....the list goes on my friend...
you decide where it ends.

Re: I 'need' 100 more hp ...
I agree with most said here, spray it.
Some talons are pretty deceiving, I bought one a while back as a winter car (Turbo AWD, why not!?) Ended up doing a full exhaust, bigger turbo (Evo3 16G), a few little things like intake, intercooler, fuel, and a dyno tune. Car made almost 350 to the wheels, and I managed a best of 12.2 in the quarter, even tho my 60ft could have been better. Those cars can sneak up on you pretty easy if you get someone who is serious about them and not the bright a$$ green POS in "fast and the furious" lol

You have full exhaust. Put in a nice cam, bigger injectors, work the intake a bit. And add some boost. Then smoke that Talon!

Re: I 'need' 100 more hp ...
I sprayed my 88 L98 (bones stock and unopened ever. What happened is the cylinder pressure took out the original head gaskets. My fuel pressure gauge showed that the pump was fighting an uphilll battle to a certain degree. My motor has seen about 40 lbs. of "bugger sugar" and is till going strong.
-I was hooked on my second button hit and I was spraying it daily. (esp while merging on the highway from work)
--I was emptying out a single 10 lbs. can every 3 days and id have to wait till payday to get "my fix" (I eventually converted my setup to a dual 10 can setup...before selling it all)
---Never got to race anyone or go to the track with it.
Finally you: WILL NEED:
A full tune up
A perfect running motor (pref L98)
Headers (as your cylinder pressure will be sky high with the logs holding you back)
Biggest and longest you can get. (pref 1 3/4" LTs - 3" collector)
cat back
A good flowing muffler or better yet (keeping cylinder pressure in mind) a cut out.
93 oct. or better
A very long prayer
money
time
more time
bottle heater
blanket(s)/ insulator jacket(s)
pressure gauge (pref. electric)
110% perfect working cooling system (...lol...I couls tell the smack was working -good- by the water temps with the stock config....)
The trans is will have to be "kept in mind"
depending on your traction situation...SP mods
tires
(no hard launching on that 10 bolt either...)
Thats about it...
-electric fuel pressure gauge and I would like to throw in: MSD part #8xxx Blaster coil (not the stock replacement coil, which dose nothing better) AND an MSD 6AL Digital box. To "light the night away"
-Lastly even more money

Too much air flow can lower torque if u dont go up in cubes. With a stock l98 lets say 250 hp he would make only 400 to the crank. He wont need headers that holds 800 hp. And headers that big cost more than the whole set up plus engine with prices just under 2000.

My coated 1 3/4 - 3" LTs cost me $385....air flow wont hurt anything, he will need EVERYTHING that I listed if he wants the power and be able to use.

Where u get them headers from. Most comp headers are 800 plus. Add custom y pipe o2 bong welded on. Try to put a single plane intake on a 305 see how u move off the line

Re: I 'need' 100 more hp ...
i think eagle talons are turbo from the factory. a friend had one, it was pretty quick, i've been beat by a 2008 V6 mustang, and the other day while my pedal was mashed trying to get away from a 98 dodge 2500 "rolling coal" i was ousted....then again i have a 305 tpi too...
I agree, best bang for your buck it seems here from what everyone has said, cam and heads....intake runners too
