Timing for power

I have an 88 Iroc-Z, still in the learning process of the restoration and mechanical work. I'll be 20 this year and am in college, this is even my first third gen post! But I've done plugs and plug wires, oil and filter, and air filters/fuel filter. I've got the distributor cap and rotor, and know the stock timing is 6 degrees before tdc, but is there a better and more powerful timing setting?

Anywhere from 6-14, it just depends on the fuel and what the car wants

Re: Timing for power

If your area does emissions testing, you'll have to drop it back to 6 degrees BTDC to get it to pass. Afterward bump it back up.

Re: Timing for power

No one in central texas really cares about emissions, it's awesome, that's why everyone has straight pipes in their trucks, I've never even had my exhuast gases tested

Re: Timing for power

I got a pair if beefy black shorty headers, I won't run high enough rpms to need long tubes that bad(6000 max), I dunno what brand. he had them in the box when I bought the car. They have the egr thingy that blows air Into them, I'm going to delete that, grind it out with a die grinder and remove the other parts period, I just hope it doesn't throw a code. I got a quote for some straight pipes for $180

That is great. I wish I lived there. Is all of Texas the same way or just certain areas?
