wanting to change my computer system

i recently put a 350 in my 86(Which used to be a 305) TPI and im using the old computer from the 305 but the guy i bought the car put the stupid hypertech chip in it thats supposed to increase horse power but doesnt do anything but use more fuel and thats why im wanting to change the computer and get rid of the chip. and was wondering if this would work in my car ?

The link you posted is to the same ecm you already have . The 1227165 was used on tpi maf 86-89. The calibration memcal needs to be replaced or reprogramed. If you want to tune it w

+1. The ecm is the same between the 305 and 350. The difference is in the Memcal/programming used by the ecm.

Re: wanting to change my computer system

ok i need to buy a new one because the hypertech chip is what i want rid of, ive heard of it messing with gas mileage and mine is just getting worse. and every little bit helps and for future posting just removing the chip wont help, when you take the chip out the car wont start so i need a new computer.

the eprom in the memcal is the calibration for your engine and transmission combination it also contains a limp home network of resisters and sets the firmware for a v8. The ecm is a brick when you remove the memcal.

Re: wanting to change my computer system

the computer system in the car right now has this chip in it http://www.jegs.com/i/Hypertech/533/...FQ6EnQodrTAAnQ

which what ive read around is supposed to help HP by messing with the air flow and fuel mix ratio but in simple terms everyone ive talked to it doesnt do anything but dump more fuel into the motor. which if it doesnt help my HP i dont want it on there if its wasting gas. now as stated above when i try just removing the chip from the ECU it will not start so ive been told to just buy another ECU and put it in

Re: wanting to change my computer system

I assume you went with 22#hr injectors for the 350?
There are several hypertech some were oem memcals that were reprogramed, some were made for hypertech and have a black goo over the circuit board and a small chip under the eprom ( these cannot be reprogramed ) and a piggy back board that attaches to the oem memcal. You maybe able to get your memcal reprogramed depending on the style. You can use any tpi 350 automatic broadcast code from 86-88 but the 89 is a better definition but has vats enabled.

Re: wanting to change my computer system

The ecm thinks you are running 19#hr injectors and controlling the pw accordingly but if you were running 19#hr injectors on a 350 with a 305 memcal you run too lean and have over heat issues. When you run 22#hr injectors on a 350 and use a 305 memcal you run really rich.

Re: wanting to change my computer system

kept the same injectors from the 305. but they arent stock but were used in the 305 they are weird looking(ones i havent seen) they have 3 holes in the end instead of 8 or 9 smaller ones?? now im not an expert in fuel injectors or anything but it was something that the guy that put my motor in has never seen before. i was wondering if that had anything to do with my worsening MPG

Re: wanting to change my computer system

You should be able to identify the injectors by a number stamped or cast into the body of the injector. Did you install a adjustable fuel pressure regulator to compensate for smaller injectors ?

doubt it lol. i didnt install the motor had a friend do it. but id say he didnt by not being able to see it under the hood or him telling me he did. i plan to buy 22LB injectors. but the ECU is what i want to replace first

http://www.automotix.net/usedautopar...0d1a&seq_num=6

would that be the one i need??

You not getting it are you?

The ECM's are identical ; as you have been told above only the chip / memcal / prom ( whatever you want to call it )that has the tuning info is different to suit whatever engine the ECM is controlling.
All you need is a memcal for a 350 to replace whatever chip is in it now

Re: wanting to change my computer system

That seems like a waste of money if you haven't confirmed your ecm is faulty. A little much for. 1227165 ecm. Southbay fuel injectors.com has bosch 3 22#hr injectors for a good price.

And given it states the ECM suits both 305 and 350 engines, most likely it comes without the memcal as most ECM's do ( you are supposed to refit your existing memcal ) so you would be no better off

In any case $50 -$75 is a more common price for a used '165 ECM that you have

Yes, but they are way over priced, you need to verify the injectors first and who know what cam is in your new engine but having a 350 memcal and 22#hr is the best you can do without dataloging and programing it yourself.

Than 22#hr injectors and a 350 tune would get you back to a stock 350 configuration.

Re: wanting to change my computer system

On tpi maf 86-89 the memcals are all the same it's just the calibration programing that is different between automatic, manual 305, 350. The can be reprogramed or there are several guys who are parting out thirdgens in the classified section here.
