Gear drive with TPI ???
Im building a TPI motor with a balanced Gm high performance crank and rods- standard stroke, with flat top ( 4 valve release ) coated hyperutechnic pistons.
High volume oil pump, roller cam- havent decided yet on cam. 190cc procomp 3002's with 2.02 / 1.60 valves. 1.5 comp roller rockers.edelbrock tes headers and Y pipe (for now) hollow cat and SLP loudmouth catback exhaust. I just put a T-56 in it too.i know I will need to make a chip , but how hard is it to run gear drive?

Also 24# injectors heavily ported intake, 54mm throttle body and SLP runners

Re: Gear drive with TPI ???
Going to say this in the strongest terms I can. Cam gear drives are hard on cam bearings and dizzy gears. Really no reason for them and certainly no reason for them on the street.

I got a mild gear drive set, i love the gear drive sound and want it to sound different. I usually pull the motor every year or so anyway just wondeeing about the knock sensors

Not sure your knock sensor will love it as much. I'm def thinking you'll pick up false knock counts and get Knock retard. Id ask the guys over in the DIY Prom section of the site

Re: Gear drive with TPI ???
The computer (ECM) watches the knock sensor and if it sees knock present it changes the spark advance
so your motor doesn't blow up.
You can get the knock sensor settings changed or deleted in the tune
You can't just " delete" ( as in unplug ) the KS because in the stock tune the ECM looks for it being there
and tests that it is working correctly when the engine first starts up
and if the ECM doesn't " see" it, it will lock out the spark advance over 1500rpm so your engine will run like cr*p

I want to keep my esc. So I def dont want to delete from prom but how can you change it the knock sensor? Can you lower the sensitivity?

Re: Gear drive with TPI ???
U wont get any real hp or power the gear drive especially if ur getting the noisy ones. people will think they that car is supercharged n then u pop the hood an just see a stock motor.

Stock motor? Im building the whole thing, like I said I like how it sounds. I know its not a performance upgrade.

Re: Gear drive with TPI ???
I haven't had a knock sensor on my 89 MAF car since 92. No code/light for it ever.
A SD car won't let you just unhook it, it will throw a code.
I would ditch the geardrive and the highvolume oil pump. Use a standard psi and volume.

Re: Gear drive with TPI ???
Really not to stray too far off topic.Yrs ago the only performance gear drives provided was for guys who where really on their game in cam timing and had a timing cover so they could change it easily. But it was found the harmonic from the gears had a negative effect on ignition timing and on some soft cams, broke the cam.

Re: Gear drive with TPI ???
Just out of curiosity what about a belt drive? Any ill effects from one of those? Always wanted one but boy are they pricey!!

Re: Gear drive with TPI ???
Know this statement is going to see resistance. Hydro roller cams don't like dual roller chains. A good quality single roller chain is all you need. And remember GM machined 2 or 4 degrees retarded into their timing chain gears for smog laws. So to degree a cam is important.

Re: Gear drive with TPI ???
Ill make sure and tell my solid roller it has a single with a nylon gear so its not mad at me
Belts can break and gear drive harmonics cause more problems than they are worth with roller motors. Personally Id get tired of the sound after about 30 min.
Being sarcastic but single rollers are fine as said for most apps
