TPI and a HEI

OK now this may sound a little dumb and i apologize in advance if it does, I am new to fuel injection. I have a TPI setup off of a 1987 305 camaro. I was thinking about getting a Mega-squirt computer to control the fuel but not the spark, because I have a brand new non-computer controlled HEI. Well I was reading some other posts and someone was talking about how stock gm computers can get the job done if you burn the prom chip. I know a little about prom chip burning but not enough to do it myself. My question would be can a stock gm computer be programmed to control just the fuel alone and not the spark? The OEM reference number on the computer is 1227165. I understand that this is not the most efficient way to do this, i just want to know if its possible.

Re: TPI and a HEI

possible with the mega squirt but not with the stock ecm unless you can provide a pulse signal to the ecm to fire the injectors. but not good way to control the spark on a efi vehicle.

Re: TPI and a HEI

Thank you for the quick response. How would i provide a pulse signal to the ecm? And thank you for reaffirming what I knew about mega-squirts ability to control the fuel by itself. I had read a couple articles and posts about it but wasn't quite sure if it could do that.

Re: TPI and a HEI

Ok. So then how would mega-squirt know when to pulse the injectors? Again I apologize if I sound like a jerk, you've been really helpful.

Re: TPI and a HEI

I run a megasquirt and using it to control timing really isn't that hard. Shielded tach signal wire is a must. I run a computer controlled distributor and have my megasquirt control the timing. I have a timing table from an L98 and converted it to work in my megasquirt and the car runs fine. I'm sure I could gain more HP by dyno testing the car but it runs very strong.

But on the otherside of things the factory computers are very capable and in some cases better than something like the megasquirt. If you are considering megasquirt than you can handle prom burning.
