TPI intake

I have a 1985 TA with a 305tpi. I want to streamline the air ducting. I keep seeing pics of tpis with just a k&n style filter on the throttle body. how can i do this and if so where does the MAF go?

Re: TPI intake

1985 uses a MAF sensor, so you cannot use that cool looking K&N oval/cone filter in front of the TB. Your cheap paper filter keeps your engine cleaner than an oil bath filter anyway.

Re: TPI intake

actually, you can mount an air filter on the throttle body by using a combination of the info in these 2 links,

http://www.eecis.udel.edu/%7Edavis/z28/ecm_swap/

http://www.eecis.udel.edu/%7Edavis/z28/ecm_swap_730/

the MAF sensor would go in the trash.
you didn't ask if it would be easy or cheap.

i agree with eseibel67, a good quality paper filter works better than the K&N filters.

Re: TPI intake

Upgrading to the 88-89 style intake is a worthwhile upgrade, or an aftermarket equivalent. I did a low budget swap on my old 2.8 firebird with some drier hose and even on the 2.8 it provided a noticable gain.

Dryer lint is a real power adder I think the great Smokey Yunick used it too cheat.

Re: TPI intake

The MAF sensor was used up until 89. From 90 on, the used a speed density set up which among other things uses a MAP (not MAF) sensor, which does NOT go anywhere in the intake track, so........you can use any kind of intake you like and bolt it to the front of the throttle body. For you're purposes, no....there's no way you can remove or relocate the MAF sensor.

Very brief and super simple. Mass Air Flow senses the quantity of air coming through the sensor. Manifold Air Pressure senses the pressure insided the intake itself, if I'm not mistaken. (I'm a MAF guy, so my SD/MAP knowledge is limited)

Re: TPI intake

The filter on the throttle body would suck in nothing but hot air (not good)
