Is there a cheap fuel tank sender unit solution?
I think I need a new sender unit to get my fuel gauge working again. I priced a new sender at just under $200 and then I found a universal sender by sunpro for $20 bucks. Has anyone ever tried placing one of these universal senders in their tank? I wonder if I could cut-off/remove the stock float and sensor and mount this sensor to the side of the down pipe. I think I could engineer a way to clamp it there and just run the wire up to connector at the top of the sender unit. Any ideas?

Sunpro list the ohms as 33-Full 130-half 240-Empty. Will this match up to oem sender resistance?

Factory GM sending units should be 0 ohms empty 90 ohms full. So the Sunpro won't work with the stock gauge.

It seems that this is only true for -most- gm vehicles. Has anyone ever confirmed this on the 3rd gen? I only question this because I stumbled across this thread here: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tpi/...-tpi-fuel.html
On that thread, Jv9999 seems to suggest a manual that indicates a 33-240 ohms range.
I'm hoping someone can offer first hand knowledge of the resistance range to clarify this.

Re: Is there a cheap fuel tank sender unit solution?
An Update, I checked my sender unit (still in tank) and I think that it is likely the 0-90 unit. I checked my gauge thoroughly this weekend and it seems it is the culprit not the sender. Gauge reads barely over a quarter when tank is full. I used some various size resisters and a pot to check the range of the gauge and this is what I found:
Empty: 0-10 ohms
1/4: 70 ohms
Half: 230 ohms
3/4: 320 ohms
Full: 775 ohms
I am working on a resister circuit to bring the gauge back into the 0-90 range. If all goes well I will be able to bring the range in close and make the gauge somewhat accurate. For now though I have bigger problems... New fuel pump has died...
