I searched before posting, couldn't find my answer need help with a cam!
Hey guys,
I am well aware that this is a post that is brought up quite a bit, therefore I did do some research. I just couldn't find the answer to my exact question.
I am looking for a camshaft for my bone stock L98. To be completely honest (and a lot of you guys are going to think this is dumb, but to each his own) I am only even considering changing the cam, because I want a lopey, choppy idle.
From the research that I have done, L98's were built for low RPM power. My research also tells me that cams with a choppy idle are better for getting high RPM power.
Which cam would YOU choose to go with, just to get a choppy idle. I don't plan on racing my car, so the change in the performance RPM of the engine doesn't really bother me.
Thanks for your help
Also: Im thinking of in addition to doing the cam, going with a pair of shorty headers and an SLP loudmouth II muffler. Do you think this would give a pretty bad *** lopey idle sound?

"I am only even considering changing the cam, because I want a lopey, choppy idle."
Choppy/Lopey idles and fuel injection don't usually mix very well. If that's the only reason you would like to cam swap, I wouldn't even bother. It sounds to me like you are going for sound...
If that's the case, I'd be looking into a set of long tubes, and a good exhaust. SLP loudmouth sounds good IMO, more so on the stock LTX/LSX platform than on a stock Gen I sbc.
What you are saying about L98's having low end power is true, just look at the factory power/torque ratings vs. the rpms...
Anyways, its your money, and if you want to cam it for the sound, do it... See the cam sticky for good info, and searching is a great thing...

Hey,
Thanks alot for the reply. Yes I am only considering the cam swap for sound. When you say that they dont usually mix well, what do you mean by that?
Seeing as there is no other way to do get a lopey idle, I honestly would cam it for the sound.
Do you think that doing an SLP loudmouth exhaust system with like hooker shortys or something and lowering the idle a bit would give a similar sound? Or if i want that bad *** lopey idle, I just need to throw a cam in there?

A cam with lopey idle won't have enough idle vacuum to make the computer happy. Not going to happen, sorry.

Hey apeiron,
I do have access to a shop that can re-tune my computer for me. So that shouldn't be an issue. The lower idle vacuum is just something the computer would not like correct? The engine would still function perfectly fine? It would just need the computer to be reprogrammed? (Which is no problem)

If functioning perfectly fine means significantly down on power and driving like a turd, then maybe.

I guess it didn't seem like it, but i was asking if the engine would run perfectly fine.
What are your thoughts on just doing the SLP exhaust idea and lowering the idle a bit?

I'd do an exhaust and leave the idle alone.

That seems to be the smarter choice. Maybe i'll just start building up another engine on the side that can handle what I want, and then drop it in eventually.
All good thoughts, Thank you for your input.

At the end of the day, the best way to build a motor that sounds badassed is to build a motor that is badassed.
