Getting a lopey idle on an 87 350TPI
I have a 1987 Camaro Iroc-z Z28 with a 350TPI L98. It is 100% stock besides the exhaust. There is a Flowmaster American Thunder series exhaust on it. I really like the sound of a choppy "lopey" idle. I understand the camshaft has an impact on giving the engine this sound. What camshafts (or other parts) would you guys reccomend for a predominately stock engine, to get that really bad *** choppy idle sound. Would headers help that out? If not what would?
I had heard on the forum here that i might need a custom ecu as the stock one doesn't really play nice with the new cams. Any suggestions on what custom chip to get!
Thanks

the biggest cam you can throw in a absolute stock 350 tpi is this.

and heres how it sounds in my car with a stock tune but with headers full exhaust and highflow tpi... basically full bolt on car....

this requires no head work and no tuning... i had it in my car for about a year until i went with a forged 355...

its not louder.. the older cam i had i recorded it with an actual video camera and it picked up the sound much better.... with my lt4 hotcam videos i used my crappy cell phone video camera which doesnt pick up all the sound and doesnt sound near as crisp as my video camera... but the hotcam sounds meaner than the crane cam for sure in person..

So now just to be clear. If I buy that camshaft, do I also need to get the lifters that Summit is saying that I need?
Thanks
Also which high flow TPI are you using? Between the camshaft/TPI/headers your getting 300hp?

Re: Getting a lopey idle on an 87 350TPI
i used my stock lifters.... the only reason you would need new lifters is beause your stock ones have alot of miles on them.... i would put new lifters in there since your already down that far... but you dont have to... ideally you would want to at least change springs but it can go right in.... i had my heads redone meaning a valve job and springs and retainers for that cam..... the lift isnt high enough to cause problems... you start to run into lift problems around .475 on l98 heads which this cam is almost pushing it.. also the duration isnt big enough.. once you start going over 220 duration then its almos required to get a tune or else it will not run right.... if i were you i would at least get springs.. i had a ported plenum, ported and siamesed slp runners, ported edelbrock highflow base, slp cold air intake, hedman longtubes, full exhaust and a built 700r4 with a corvette stall at the time of that video...
