Re: best tpi mods

thanks this started out as just only flowmasters to make it sound better but then it slowly snowbaledl into basically a street/strip car.... i say the best things were the suspension mods.... with more power its hard to keep it all to the ground and it just feels like poo without some sort of frame connectors and poly bushings.. the tubular pieces and bushing really made the car feel way different... my car feels like a go cart because its so stiff... my suspension is done... i just want to get a set of afr heads and a vigilante 2800 and my hotrod days for this car is about done... only thing left would be paint/body work for shows....

Oh ok so suspensions youd say about first before anything else. Also not to get off topic but i bet your car is really quick from 0-60.

Re: best tpi mods

yea if i had to do it all over again i would start with suspension mods first.. that way you have a good chassis and foundation to build upon..... but yeah it was quick from 0 to 60 about 4.5 seconds when i stalled the converter which at the time i had a 10inch 3000 stall converter.... should be quicker when i install my FIRST injection tpi system...

Re: best tpi mods

its when you take the rear hard rubber isolators that the springs are on top of.... take a piece of heater hose and cut it and slip it through one coil on each spring then install spring... it lowers the car about a half an inch... the isolators are there so the springs wont have metal to metal contact with the body but they are big and make the car sit taller... alot of people do it when lowering their car..

Suspension mods first is right, after exhaust....you will love the go kart feeling you get when you tighten up everything on these cars....

Re: best tpi mods

I agree suspension is a must! I changed out my stock sagging springs for some moog springs that I cut to get the ride height I wanted and its like abother car. Can't wait to get some subframe connectors and all new bushings under it this winter.

you will love your connectors...I swear my car freaks me out when I drive it...It is such a joy...I don't have any hi dollars pieces in it, but it was all thought out pretty well...The only thing I do not have is a shock tower brace, and I am waiting till after the new motor goes in to put one in the car...

Re: best tpi mods

Hat sfcs are you running? I've seen some people run two diff sets also. Mines going down to replace the caved in oil pan put some headers on it custom fabed y pipe and maybe a cam that I can pick up from a friend but sfcs are a must along with a wonderbar and maybe a strut bar.

Re: best tpi mods

Hothkis..(will never buy again) I had to custom fit my y pipe also...Had to have a welding shop fab it up, as it was 4 inches, or more too long towards the passenger side of the car....Wonder bar is nice...Cant believe they all did not come with that...The funnest thing I ever added to my 89 was the stall...Like a different car, and I love the sound of riding the stall..I know it heats the tranny up, but thats why ive got a tranny cooler the size of Texas..lol....

Yes a stall is a lot of fun! I went from a stock stall to a 9.5in 3500 in my 82 trans am and it felt like I gained 100hp lol

Seeing a thread similar to this on tech, one member said and I am sure I will feel the same way when I get one. It went something like this.

A stall. Because it made all my other mods that much better.

How hard is that mod? Was your ride any less bumpy after?

Car will not ride less bumpy after. Everything is the same, but the spacer is removed from the top of the spring so the body will sit a little lower to the ground.

It's very easy to do. Jack the car up, unbolt the lower shock mounts, and the springs and upper spacers will fall out. Put rubber heater hose on the top 3/4 turn of the coil to isolate the spring from the body.

I forget, it might be 1/2", but just to be safe, 5/8" will be o.k. Use cable ties to hold it on the spring.

Won't lower the rear an inch, but most likely a 1/2". Not bad for almost free.

Re: best tpi mods

My best mod was subframe connectors. Really made a big difference in how the car handled. After doing suspension mods to improve the ride, brakes are next on the list followed by performance mods. Pumping up the horsepower without improving the **** poor 3rdGen brakes is a recipe for desaster.

Re: best tpi mods

Most stock cars nowadays are faster than most stock 3rd gens and I'm ok with that. Don't get me wrong I love a fast thirdgen but I want it to be fun to drive in and out of traffic and have fun on backroads. If you start to make more power and the car was setup for a 200hp motor your gona spin spin spin lol. My cam stalled 305 in my 82 will kill the tires from a 30 roll and all the suspension and chassis was bone stock.

That is a massive list!!! I have a 91 z28 TPI 350, the previous owner bored out .30 over, flow master and put 42lb injectors in it but its still not enough power for me. I'm thinking about pulling the motor and rebuilding it with some performance enhacements, my only concern is I live in california and we have smog ****'s here. Do you have any suggestion on what would give me a good kick but still keep me smog legal? A lot of people say cam but they dont have any advice on what one.

First thing you need to do is take out those 42lbs injectors and put the stock 22lb back in. That will increase your performance. You dont need them and the chip is not burned for them.

Get a set of Dyno Dons dual cat headers. Thats all you need for now. Later on down the road save up your money to buy heads, cam, and all the intake parts that you will need.

Start with a full exhaust. I ran a 14.8@93 stock. Then I ran a 14.04@98 with hooker 2055 headers, 3" y pipe. 3" cat back and a afpr. Still had the 2.77's in the car. I was so close to 13's with a 2.77 rear and bolt ons. I only got 3 runs in. Then I started the h/c/I swap.
