My new 355

Hi guys,
2 years ago I bought my first car, an 86 T-top Trans Am and now I tired of the 305 TPI with leaking crank seal and leaking valve seal. I was looking to build a nice 350, but I'm on budget because I'm a 19 years old student! So I went to the scrap yard and found a 350 out of an 85 corvette. I didn't knew it was an 85, the guy told me that it was an 89 but I had a little surprise when I disassembled the engine! Anyway for the 150$ I paid I can't really complain! Oh, I paid 150$ because the Corvette as burned, and so the engine! Here's some picture of what I got:

Pretty messy!
The right side valve cover was melt and I found some aluminium in the lifter valley. I trashed the flat tape lifter, push rods and camshaft. And the 462 heads are now sitting behind my wheels to block them! So I took the Block to the machine shop, they cleaned it and bored it to 4.030'' Installed new cam bushing. They resized the Rod and intalled the new Mahle flat top pistons.

So now I have
-Sonofluxed Block
-Polished crankshaft 10/10
-New Mahle Flat top pistons 4.02876''
-New Cam, Rod and Crank bushing

-Hasting Molly coated pistons ring
-Melling High volume oil pump
-Cloyes double roller timing chain
-Howards Cam 110235-12 Roller cam and lifter set
1000-5000 RPM Cam
.488 intake lift @ 264 duration
.495 exhaust lift @ 270 duration
112 lobe center and 108 intake centerline

I'm still waiting on my lifter since they packed a set of BBC roller lifter in the SBC box. I always order from Jegs and I always like their service!
But I ordered the cam and lifter from Summit and I'll never deal with them again! They send me the wrong part, I wait 6 days to get a reply to my email. I paid 140$ to get it shipped by FedEx and get my part quick and now I must retrurn my lifter with US post and wait 3 weeks for shipping delay or they don't pay the return shipping cost!

I'm still missing the head set!
The Patriot Performance heads came up, the 2169 look good. 185 cc intake, 64cc of CC, straight plug(I don't know if I my Hedman Headers will clear out the angle plug) and those are aluminum for 795.00$ I know the AFR are way better but, they're 600$ more and I'm not building an race engine, I only want to have fun with my T/A in the streets! I think those are good head for the price, but there's not much info on them!

I need the push rod and the rocker too, I think I'll go with the comp cam roller rocker since they're not expenssive.

Re: My new 355

I was talking about these Rocker, Comp Cams high energy
http://www.jegs.com/i/Comp-Cams/249/...ductId=1348314
1.5 Ratio 3/8 stud, all aluminum and full roller for 161.99$

I got a question for the Cam timing, there's different setting on my timing gear. There's three different setting, I think those are Advance, stock and retard. For what I remember, retarding the cam timing will give more high RPM HP but less low end torque. I'll use a TPI set-up so I'll have a good low end torque, maybe I should retard the cam timing?

As I'm using a roller cam I need to buy an cam button and a lock plate to prevent the camshaft from moving, should I buy a new stronger timing cover too or I can use the stock one?

Re: My new 355

I would suggest 7/16 over 3/8 for extra strength where it's needed, but that's just my opinion (since you're looking to spend money on a set of rockers anyways).

Nice buy on that motor.
