Best cam for 383 stroker
Hey guys,
Please help if possible I was wondering I have a stock l98 right now that is goin to be bored out to a 383 stroker with new everything meaning rods ported head and I have a stock rear end but it's a 3.23 posi rear end with a stok 700r4 but it has shiftkit. It will also have the holley stealth ram! Now my question is what type of cam should I do I'm going custom by Lloyd Elliot but he is giving me a opinion of two cams and I want to ask people here! I'm looking for the most hp and tq that I can use in the distance of a drag race or a straight away.. The cams are a 226/232 or a 230/236 cam what would you think please give info thanks

Lloyd is a well renowned builder. Decide yourself how the vehicle is going to be used and then listen to Lloyd. He'll give you good advice with your choice.

Re: Best cam for 383 stroker
He'll yea I've been talking to him for a Long time and even though he don't have that he does l98 on his website n u talk to him he know a lot about them and knows how to work around.... He is going to make my 230/236 run with that type of power by the duration and stuff of the 226/230... So yea and I know about the tranny but I'm going to put a bigger stall ten stock but I will be upgrading soon well yea my camaro hold up with 27" drags on the sticky track. But I'm goin to try not
To put it n the track after dyne and all that this way I don't brake my tranny but that will be the next thing after this build.

Re: Best cam for 383 stroker
what heads and intake are on it? Compression?
Any short runner intakes with decent flowing 195cc or larger heads I'd go with the 230/236 type grinds Lloyd does. They kick butt in LT1's and stroker motors too although at a bit lower rpm. Most of his hotter running 350-383 builds have bigger duration cams than that. Some in the 238/242 range.
After having a 230/245 cam in my 383 from Lloyd's previous cam grinder, Bret Bauer, I wouldnt hesitate to run the 230/236 or go a touch larger. That cam kicked major butt!! 230 deg lobe with high lift and tighter LSA is a great match for a 383 with 6000-6300 rpm peak hp goal and shift near 6500 or beyond, depending on exhaust duration and overlap.
A good 226 cam on good heads/intake will get a 383 in the 11s in a 3500lb raceweight car. All depends on the rest of the setup.
Whats the lift on the cam? Usually high 500's to almost .600 lift. Thats where I'd be with a good set of heads.
If ported L98 type heads, then go with the smaller 226 type cam and keep the lift in the mid .500's range. You are limited abit more with a ported GM L98 casting on flow and rpm potential.

Re: Best cam for 383 stroker
230/236 .622/.624*112 LSA cam is the cam that he said to go
With because I'm building it to a 383 with new fuel pump injectors and all that stuff also going to change my tpi bull intake to a Holley stealth ram so I breathe better and run a good set of headers thru my 3" borla exhaust. My compression I don't know yet I'm looking for good compression to run off anywhere from 150-250 shot of nitrous. What do you think on that huh?? And yes it's my l98 aluminum heads that I'm using I'm porting them out to a le2 package which is 205cc and I'm going with his cam and then build 383... After this whole setup I'm going to have everything tune to run great and any knoe if they have done something like this the ending hp & tq and et 1/4 time on this setup... Thanks I'm just waiting to save all the money and install everything n

Re: Best cam for 383 stroker
I'm curious about that suggestion because the last time i talked to Lloyd, he said he couldnt port the L98 heads to the same level as the LT1 heads. So a LE2 L98 type head would only be a LE1.5 type LT1 head. 260 cfm with a 2.00 valve I believe. That was 2-3 years ago tho.
Thats a bunch more lift than I'd expect for a ported L98 head. I'd run half inch less than that but I'm not Lloyd Elliott Will require great springs to control that lobe. I'd consider a conical shape spring with 150-160lbs on the seat. Spend money on good quality springs since that cam will beat them up and they will start to loose pressure if they arent a quality spring.
L98's shaved up abit will finish in the 54-56 cc range. With a flat top 383 thats over 12 to 1. Way to much. You'll want a slight dish if using those heads. -16cc would be a starting point.
Assume the tune is good and the valvesprings are stiff enough to control the cam lobe, that should be up near 400whp and run mid 11's at over 118 mph. Similar to my combo.
383, HSR, AFR 195's with BRE cam 230/245 .603/.613 on a 109 lsa. I ran 11.47 at 118 in summer heat
You will want a 3.5-4" exhaust too to get the most out of it.

Re: Best cam for 383 stroker
Yes, I was looking to do a cam only swap on my L98 then heads/cam with 113 L98 castings and wanted to see what could he get out of a L98 head. He said he couldnt match LE2 but be closer to LE1-LE1.5 with bigger valves. Not as much material on a L98 head as the good casting LT1 heads.
I was almost set on goin that direction until I got AFR 195's as a graduation gift Then I built the 383 instead after seeing the cam bearings were worn in my 160K mile L98.
But I talked to Lloyd about a HSR L98 cam setup and was excited. I was hoping for 360-ish whp out of it and he made it seem like it was easy to do since his LE1 LT1's were doing that easily.
Since they finish up at 58cc stock, he said he'd shave them to around 54-56cc which is just like the LT1 heads. That give great compresssion on a stock bottom end 350 or even a flat top piston 355 but too much for a 383 stroker unless it had a dish.

Yea I've gave him a couple of set but I think my goal was alittle higher the 360ish so that's y I went with the le2 and I'm doing all the upgrade meaning *Manley 2.00/1.56 6000 series valves
PAC 1218 bee hive springs (145 lbs seat and 340 lbs open)
Steel retainers and locks
205 cc intake port
milling, cleaning and assembly
flow about 275/190 CFM
assembled and ready to bolt on... But I'm going with the patriot Gold extreme springs

Re: Best cam for 383 stroker
Bummer that this thread died I wanted to read more and more he he he.
Lloyd is doing my 374 casting LT1 heads for me (I'm going with the LE2 package). He's also cleaning up and hogging out my intake for me
They're gonna be 205cc runners and right around 57cc chambers, and I'm gonna be running 12:1 compression on pump fuel, so Lloyd suggested at least a 236 duration custom grind cam for me. He'll hook me up. Actually, he said my setup loves the 236 duration the most, as far as driveability and a strong pull all the way up to the rev limiter.
Plus, my 383 should be nicely over 500 flywheel horsepower and have way nice torque.
He also likes the Patriot springs over the Pacs. He has discovered that the Patriots take one heck of a beating and really resist weakening way better than the Pacs. Lloyd's awesome!!
The L98 heads I am not sure about, but it would make sense to go down to a 230 for smaller runners and lower compression.
I frickin' cannot wait until my swap is finally done. Waiting sucks.
