Converting an LT1 intake

So i am in the process of heading back to fuel injection and i'm weighing my options. I an thinking of buying a TPI harness and then converting an LT1 intake (as i have 2 extra) to be used on my Gen 1 SBC. The problem is i have Vortec heads. Is it possible to use the LT1 intake with the Vortec heads? I know the bolt pattern will have to be fixed to match the Vortec style, the only other issue i have read is a problem is that the Vortec ports are taller? If that's true by how much? Would it ruin performance if an LT1 intake was used? Could the LT1 intake be ported to match? Any info would be appreciated! Thanks!!

Re: Converting an LT1 intake

One way to find out ; put a Vortec intake gasket on LT1 intake and see if there is enough meat to rework it

Reg SBC intake on Vortec head

Re: Converting an LT1 intake

The vortec heads were designed after the LT1 heads. The ports should be the same or close.

Re: Converting an LT1 intake

So i took out one of my LT1 intakes and cleaned it up and painted it. I also ground down the front sides where the coolant nipples will go. I also measured my vortec intake and found out that the front 4 bolts and the rear 4 bolts on the LT1 intake match up to the Vortec heads. Its basically an angled vortec intake with 4 bolts in the center. All i should have to to is angle the holes straight down on the outer 8 bolts and it will bolt right up. Now i just have to confirm the intake ports.

Re: Converting an LT1 intake

Just set the intake on your engine to see how the ports cover. Ive found that pic is VERY deceiving

Heres my old mock-up block. Alum is an old RHS raised runner head, iron is stock 906 vortec. Intake is a scrap LT1 I was playing with

These ports are .100" taller than the L98 ports but still cover. You could port match them, but the intake runners will be getting thin

Vortecs, they cover barely. A gasket in there will raise it up ever so slightly, but it's going to be a tight fit any way you look at it

Back when I was researching the intake, I saw one guy who used a LT4 intake and chopped the 4 corners off a stock CPFI intake and welded on. He claimed the ports matched exactly, but the pics only showed the assembled engine. His intake was painted burgundy

I ran into a guy at streetrod show in Daytona that used LT4 intake on Vortec heads because port sizes were similar. He drilled old style bolt pattern in heads as I did to use Miniram III, which I'm using on Vortec heads.
I didn't inspect finished product to see details, so I don't know how he finished.
He had hood closed and was walking away from car.

Re: Converting an LT1 intake

I have extra blocks + older junk heads but i don't have the extra vortec heads to mock it up. I drive the Camaro daily until winter so i'll see if i can find some cheap vortecs around to throw on an old block to mock it up...
