TPI trouble HELP!!!

I have an 89 trans am that had a 350 stock in it. someone before I had the car took everything out and now i'm stuck trying to piece everything back together. So far I have everything and the car runs...kinda. the car idles fine but anything past idle the car starts backfiring and seriously won't even rev up. intake and exhaust backfiring. when I disconnect the bypass wire to time it the car actually retards when I give it the gas(this is all of course after I've timed the thing to 6 Before), and when i plug it back in it advances and still won't run. both directions makes the car backfire and I'm just at a complete loss with it. I've checked pretty much every sensor and everything to my knowledge is just fine. I don't have all the vacuum lines hooked up yet but I'm sure they won't make it do this, plus i don't have any emissions hooked up due to headers. PLEASE HELP!!!
