Tune up specialist needed

Does anyone know of a reputable shop in the Northeast Ohio area that knows how to tune up a 1987 IROC with LB9 engine?

I took the car to a local Chevy dealership in Cleveland and they told me that didn't have the tools or know how to work on the TPI engine.

wow are you kidding me? thats so stupid, Pontiac, GMC, Chevy dealers here have always known to work on TPI. There easier than the new cars atleast lol. Did you try flipping through yor yellow pages in the phone book? Im sure you could call around and ask for people that have TPI expierence. The thing is you dont really need expierence because my Camaro and TA both had TPI and didnt have a clue at first until i started doing a few easy things realizing how easy it was, but thats just me. Just flipped through your local yellow pages, you may find somewhere cheap to boot.

Re: Tune up specialist needed

The TPI engine is new for me. I'm used to old school carbureted engines. The car staarts up fine but as soon as it warms up the idle drops way down. It surges up for a couple of seconds and drops way down again. It will do this a couple of times and then finally just stall. It starts right back up with the same problem.
I just replaced the battery that had gone bad. When I started the car it was backfiring and running really sluggish so I shut it down and restarted it and it seemed to run fine although it still had the irradicate idle problem.

Do you think that the problem could be the ecm? I've replaced the IAC the TPS the cap rotor and ignition module but no change. Someone mentioned that the EGR may be bad or that the O2 sensor may be bad. It's driving me crazy the car only has 51,000 miles on it.

It's your fuel injectors. I'm 90% sure. This issue is very common. do a search on it. Then get yourself to fuelinjectorconnection.com and buy some new ones. If that doesn't work go to a TPI specialist and have it tuned.

I'm doing a fuel injector swap as we speak because I had the same issue.

Re: Tune up specialist needed

is ur check engine light on? if its 02 that will kick on a light.did u install the tps correctly?if u want to diag the injectors, see if u can find a used fuel rail cheap.a friend of mine had a iroc the same time i had mine, his had a problem with running smooth,i cant remember exactly what it was doing but we changed the fuel pump twice.after that didnt fix the problem we pulled off the upper intake and his fuel rail,we diaged the injectors with them hooked up but not in the intake.this was bout 3 years ago so i dont remember all the details but if it comes down to it ill figure it all out again so i can help you out.his problem ended up being that 3 injectors were not working.

Re: Tune up specialist needed

Hey Guys. I have an 88 IROC Z 28 that belonged to my son who passed, away from brain cancer. I have replaced the dist. cap, wires, ignition Coil, & O2 sensor. She still runs very uneven. She used to run like a tiger. Some people have said fuel pump, out of time, or bad injector. It is my daily driver. I can't afford to replace this & that being that I amon a fixed income. Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I live in the Daytona Beach area! Thanks

Re: Tune up specialist needed

First of all sorry to hear about your son. Very tragic indeed.

Trying to diagnose over the internet is usually pretty difficult.

Unfortunately your description of the problem doesn't give a lot to go on. What ends up happening in cases like that is people throw $$$/parts at the car until they stumble on the root cause. Clearly that's not cost effective

So the more info/data you can give on the symptoms, the better the odds of someone figuring it out the first time. What also helps out tremendously is if someone can get a scanner on the car (not just to read codes, but to capture run data).

One of my 87's started doing the same thing before I parked it in December for the winter. I need to have it checked out.

Did you replace that stuff trying to solve the problem? Or did the problem start after you replaced some stuff?
