88 Iroc Z code 12,22,36,42
I have a 5.7L 350 in my 88 iroc. I just recently changed the entire dist. due to the old one literally falling apart and a code 42. I have finally set the timing 5 degree advance with est disconnected and tightened dist. reconnect est and idles regular. when advance rpm timing gets advance to far it will not come back down until restarted. I have codes 12,22,36,42. I have been working on this problem for a month now and cannot figure it out. BTW it idles after timing set at 1000 rpm. That's way to high. Could it be a iac or tps problem? or even a maf? I checked the maf sensor and no wires are broken. Please help.

code 22 - Throttle Position sensor voltage low
code 36 - maf burnoff problem
code 42 - electronic timing control problem
Did you reconnect the timing connector by the heater box after you set the timing?

I connected it right after. and as far as the timing im talking about with a timing light hooked up it will show as normal on the marks but when u advance the throttle the timing advances and won't come back down till restarted.

Did you get a "stock replacement" dizzy, or did you get a "high performance" super fancy dizzy????

Hello hurley7838!!!
Is the high performance dizzy the right one for your application???
The ignition module could be giving you the problem!!
Did you have to install the ignition module, and if you did, did you use lots of the di-electric grease???

No it all came assembled. BTW today I made some progress. I replaced the suspected faulty iac valve and it seems to fix a lot of things. My timing doesn't go all out of wack now. I still can't seem to set the idle at 450 without it stalling. Right now I'm going to check the tps and go from there. But I have fix the higher idle that was also erratic. So I get back on when I find out my voltage on tps. It might just be bad.

Re: 88 Iroc Z code 12,22,36,42
I ended up clearing all the codes. I took it for a drive and it seems to lack power. I know it not the engine because when I rev it up without it being in drive it definitely has a lot of torque. Put it in drive it accelerates slow. I did have a code 44 now. which is 02 sensor. It could be a clogged catalytic converter. It has set since 98 so i wouldn't be surprised. Plus that would explain the higher idle at 1000 due to the engine having to work harder to get through the cc. BTW the tps is working and I set it for .54v and checked the voltage at wot. no drops in voltage and it goes to 4.90v. So that's good. I going to check the cc today. If you have any other ideas please let me know.
