Looking to upgrade the factory fuel pump on my 92 TPI, should I do a intank pump or a inline "helper pump", do I need to drop out the tank or can I access it from above, Thanks

cant really tell you which way to go but i know when i had to mess with mine i was guna drop the tank then someone told me to check from top. well previous owner had cut a panel to access from top didnt really like that idea i dont think i do it if it wasnt there so i far as i know theres no top access.if u think inline helper would work id go that route cause as far as i know u have to drop the exhaust to

Hello Maine 92!!

The best solution is to once and for all get rid of the intank fuel pump, that way you'll never have to drop the rear end (dealer service method) etc to change the fuel pump again!!

You can access the fuel pump two ways, one is as per the aforementioned drop the rear etc, the other way is to build an access panel from above, it involves removing rear interior carpeting, cutting the floor pan, etc....!!

A remote mounted fuel pump in the engine compartment, or after the fuel filter under the car are the best options!!

Just think how easy, and less time consuming it would be changing the fuel pump if the need arose, if it was mounted in the engine compartment, say on the strut tower!!!

thats pretty much what i did. but i have carb motor and my pump basically was fast enough to deliever. so put on machanical pump on motor

put a holley 255lph pump back there. Its tough to drop the tank and all that, but hey thats half the fun of it

I got a walboro 255 and i like it alot, its quieter and puts out alot more fuel pressure so a adjustable fuel pressure regulator is a good thing to have. and just drop the tank, dont hack up the car its not like you have to change it all the time. 4 hours of hard work is better than a lifetime of knowing you put a gapping hole in your car because your lazy.

Might consider making a access panel, have the equipment to make it correctly, my exhaust is welded and I don't want to cut it if I can avoid it. Would the access go from the truck or passenger compartment?

is it welded to the headers or just one piece after that connection. I just unbolted mine at the y and slipped it off its hangers and had plenty of room. If youre really set on hacking a hole into your car you cut it right in the middle of the hump thats before the trunk. Theres thousands of pics of this, do a search for "access panel"

If you insist on having an access panel, do it right, remove your tank, and make it a real pro job, not a hack job!!! With the tank removed, you can see what your doing!! Cutting blindly down above the tank is not the safest thing to do!! Your exhaust should be okay, even if it's welded!! The one time that you remove the tank will be a learning experience, and you might even decide to forego the access panel!!

Personally, I would look for a way to mount the fuel pump externally from the tank, for better access, than the removable panel can provide!!

The only answer is the Racetronix with hot wire kit. Whatever they rate it at, it is severely under rated. The racetronix pump can handle a 502 ram jet on a 150 wet shot. My buddy has had that pump for maybe two years and it works great.

I also use the racetronix with hot wire kit and it works great on a mild 383 with a 100 shot for about a year now. I'd be careful and back down the regulator before first starting the car. When I first started my car after the pump was in, fuel pressure shot up past the 100 psi on my gauge! That pump will never, ever, die, ever.

IMO dropping the tank and all that is a waste of my time, I'd rather spend it on something that makes a difference. I'm not a hacker, just have my prorities on other things, like things that you can actually see. Not to belittle someone else's efforts, just not important to me.

Racetronix is a drop in pump, and it is one of the most important things to do to your car along side subframe connectors. What if you want to upgrade later and need more fuel? What if you start to spray and need more fuel for nitrous and the engine, it will support it. Having a quality fuel pump keeps you from being stranded somewhere, I worry more about reliablity and performance than what others think of my mods.

I bought a fuel pump from BBK for my Trans Am, turned out to be a Walbro unit. Which then turned out to be the BAD Walbro unit. Now im running a Autozone pump and it hasnt quit yet.

i have the racetronix pump and harness, installed about 8 years ago still going strong, i was one of the first for a 3rd gen. it has done long hauler on power tour= dependable

Like I said, Racetronix owns all, they under rate their pumps. When I found out that it ran a 502 ram jet, with a shot of juice, I knew that it could handle a mild 383 for a long while.

And yes, if chad ran it on the power tour, that shows reliability along side with the power.

It was from canada i believe, thats where racetronix is based out of right. Im not knockin em because there always a bad one in the batch and i didnt install the hotwire kit yet since the motor is still stock so that may have led to its early death

I have a Racetronix in-tank setup in one of my other cars and it works great. Their harnesses are top notch to say the least.

make a panel way better and should have been there from factory... if your worried about where to cut ill send u a pic of mine by the way iv put 3pumps in my car and it takes about 15 minutes now just pull carpet back and ur there

just installed my walbro yesterday, and it said "MADE IN USA" stamped on the sided of thepump casing.

They're made in a few factories I believe... I was told by a reputable and reliable source that I should make sure it was MADE IN THE USA when I looked into buying a unit...
