basics

i just bought a 1987 iroc with a 350 tpi engine. the thing is the car was sitting for 6 years so i was wondering what i should do before even attemting to start it i already drained all the old gas and changed the oil and filter. i was wondering if i should raise the oil pressor by a drill or pull the coil wire and crack it over until the oil pressor comes up. please tell me if im doing this right or should i be doing somthing more thanks for taking time and helping me out.

Re: basics

I would pre-oil it. Also check your coolant for evidence of rust. Regardless of coolant condition, drain it and replace hoses, belts, and vacuum hoses. If you find rust in the coolant, plan to replace the thermostat, but I would probably replace it on general principles. If the cooling system is rusty, flush it once the engine is started. Check all of the rubber bushings in your suspension system. Flush your brake system. Brake fluid is a moisture magnate. Check you wheel cylinders, calipers and master cylinder for evidence of leaks. You don't mention where you live. If you are in the an area where you don't have freezing weather, you may want to wait after flushing your engine before installing fresh antifreeze and run the car a bit with just water in it for a week or so to make sure that your water pump doesn't start leaking. If you are in cold country, put in the antifreeze, but keep an eye on the water pump for leaking. You may find that you need some of the sensors to get it running correctly, but I would do the rest of this stuff first and then see how it runs before replacing parts that may still be good.

Re: basics

make sure you check injectors.....the stock multitec injectors are kinda crappy, and I've noticed that after they sit, they seem to go bad. You might need a fuel pump eventually too (and fuel filter) allthat gas probably is nasty in the lines/tank/injectors. You can ohm injectors with multi-meter, between 12-14 ohms I believe means that the wiring in them is good, maybe just need cleaning. anyway, just a thought
