About to get injectors replaced... am i getting jacked? please help!
Hey guys, my 91 T/A with the 305 TPI was giving problems where it would die after a few minutes of running (ran like crap during and wouldn't let me rev it much) and refuse to start for at least a day or two. And the same thing happens after letting her sit.
So I towed it to the mechanic, and he's telling me that the injectors went bad and all 8 need to be replaced. The car has been sitting for about a year before I got it (about a month ago but still hardly driven, (5 miles?) during that month) and he said that a common problem with the injectors in these engines are that the copper coils inside em get corroded and get high electrical resistance to the point they just shut off if they've been sitting. Apparently that's the problem I'm having. So he's telling me $275 (American) for labor alone and he told me to get parts if I can find a good deal. The prices he was getting were about $90-100 PER INJECTOR so I was said "NUH UH!!!" So I found this set of 8 on jegs.com for $240:
http://www.jegs.com/i/Venom/735/HP-626-8/10002/-1
Is Venom a reputable company? Are those the right injectors? And since the fuel injection system is gonna get taken apart anyway, I figured I'd get slightly higher-performance injectors than stock. Are these better than stock?
And is $275 for labor reasonable?
I need answers soon before I get the parts!

And does the explanation that the mechanic gave me seem reasonable?

Are you in the least bit mechanically inclined? Unless money isnt an issue Id never pay close to $300 for some yahoo to change my injectors when it wouldnt be that difficult even for a first timer but thats just my opinion. At $85 an hour, thats a little over 3 hours, I guess that doesnt sound too far off though if their hourly charge is less than that, Id question the time.
Im not sure about the actual injectors so I want to follow this thread for my own knowledge too .

Any competent mechanic should have the job done within 3 hrs (hopefully this guy has tested the injectors and his diagnosis is correct).
And I'd look into getting a set of Ford Racing 19 or 21lb/hr set of injectors for your LB9 unless you're running something a little more than mild under the hood.
P.S First off those Venoms are crap and are flowing way more than what you'd need.

I'm just kinda worried since this is gonna be a risky "investment" doing it on my own for a few reasons:
1) the car is already at the mechanic and towing it back home will be expensive (not nearly as much as getting the injectors done there though)
2) if something does go haywire, I'll be completely responsible to fix it on my own and I won't have someone to blame.
3) and if something goes haywire I'll probably have to tow it BACK to the mechanic which will be awfully expensive when you add up the cost of towing (3 ways, there and back and there again) and labor (possibly parts too if I REALLY f@!# it up) to get it fixed.

Long story short, the job doesn't seem to be too crazy, but I'm just really worried/paranoid and question my own skills. :-/

Are these Accels any good?
http://www.jegs.com/i/Accel/110/150819/10002/-1
I really don't wanna spend too much on this stuff guys.
Which would YOU prefer? the Accels or the Venoms? The mechanic actually mentioned and recommended the Accels. Any thoughts?

Is your car stock? Or going to be staying stock for awhile? I just got rebuilt injectors off ebay for $139. They work great! Also the sponsors from this site are cheaper than summit or jeg's. But ebay seems to be the cheapest. I upgraded mine to "bosch design 3" 19lbs injectors. (19lbs is stock for the 305 TPI) Installation was exactly as removal. But you do have to take the upper manifold off to change them. I've worked on alot of cars and am not scared of anything they throw at me.
My opinion on venom injectors stand the same as the rest. They suck. I knew a guy that had them and some sort of controller box on his monte carlo and he always had problems. But honestly I was very pleased with ebay. Also The sponsors on this site will rebuild your old ones cheaper yet. But you'd have to wait on them.

Oh and I think I might check the resistance of the injectors myself... what kind of numbers am I supposed to be seeing? What are the in-spec numbers, and which ones tell me that the injector is shot?

The injectors should ohm out around 16 to 17 ohms. Now I have said on this board, "do not buy used injectors". However, now I have my factory '87 injectors for sale on the Parts For Sale board here on thirdgen. If you dont want to buy used injectors, then buy new Ford Racing 19#/hr injectors from Summit Racing,,, you cant go wrong with the Ford injectors.
BTW: I ohmed my injectors, the values are in my for sale post. My injectors are $75, shipping is extra.
EDIT: Swapping out injectors should take an experienced mechanic about 1 hour!

And is there a way to possibly see if an injector is shorting out?

You can check the resistance of the injectors without removing the injectors!!! that is nice. All you have to do is to remove the connector to each individual injector. These connectors can be a PITA to pop them off. When the connector is removed, you will see two metal tags (or tangs). Simply measure the resistance across these two tangs inside the injector.
If the injector is bad, then its shorted (or maybe its plugged up). BTW: I have always run fuel injector thru the gas on all of my electronic cars these days; every 5,000 miles.

I think that I am wrong about the 1 hour job. I'm sorry. I think that the runners and the top plenum must come off first before the fuel rail can be removed. Maybe, as the other member said, its a 3 hour job.
