How much fine-tuning on a L98 is CPU versus carb engine build?
I am pondering getting a spare L98 for the 87GTA, and aiming for a 400RWHP engine. I've built a few carb'd SBC engines, where all the end fine tuning was purely timing and a carb. I have a few questions about the L98 TPI setup I have.
1) Is my stock L98 a roller-cam setup?
2) Once the long block is assembled and installed, how much of the fine-tuning is CPU based?
3) Would the default computer be able to at least start up a completely custom engine for break-in?
4) Are there people good enough with TPI programming where I could send them the engine specs, and they could burn me a program?
5) Any suggested books I should read up on before I jump into this, specifically about the L98 series?
Thanks ALL!

1987 and up were roller cam engines, Pretty much everything apart from setting the base timing and possibly fuel pressure (if you get an AFPR) has got to be done in the computer. The stock prom should in most cases start the engine but it depends on how many changes you make. I just changed the heads, cam, intake, headers, throttle body, and injectors on my 305 and the stock prom started it fine but it was super rich. After a few hours with my laptop and the chip burning equipment it now starts and idle awesome, its now time to start driveing and tuning. The besst source on programming is the DIYprom forum on this board, It's a steep learning curve but there is no better source of information.
