need some tips for adding some hp

im a 16y/o kid on a pretty small budget that wants to add some horse power to my 89 TA 5.7 350 TPI
i have a pretty basic knowledge of cars, i can change my oil and simple stuff like that but im learning more and more.
and i was just wanting some tips on what would be some good things to add to my engine that arnt drastic and will just add a lil hp and hopefully be easy to install
i was thinking stuff like a slp intake, intake runners, mass airflow sensor, throttle body and sfuff like that but i dont know what would be worth getting or not
so can you guys help me out?

leave your car alone if you start f**kin with it now it will never run right. if you reallly want to make it faster get an exhaust first thats a pretty simple thing to change

Id get really, really familiarized with that car before you start throwing speed parts at it. Drive her around for a few yrs first. Those cars were all over great fun from the factory, handling, power and style only the chosen few were born to love! Honestly im 32 and use my 87 GTA for a daily driver with only the smallest of mods.

Headers and exhaust are easy and will give you nice gains. Most of what you listed wont do much for you.

Also may want to check on a cold air intake and a throttle body air foil.

check slps cold ram air intake. also i if you get headers do some research first i know the motor has to be jacked up on a few of them and also i know one brand you have to modify(cut)a bracket

Re: need some tips for adding some hp

save money and builsd a cold air kit. Go to home page, then to tech articles, scroll down to the firebird cold air intake at the bottom of its section. I reused the stock throttle body to tube boot( oval on the throttle body side/ round on the tubeside) had the exhaust shop bend a piece of exhaust pipe ( i beilive it is 3 or 3.5) a 90* then straight til I was over where the filter used to set the 45* bend down ward (so the filter started to go into the fender, and put an aftermarket filter on the end with a hose clamp, look at the article and it will make more sense. Don't for get to move the charcoal canister up by the radiator first. Rake some measurements and your off to the shop. mine cost all of 60.00 with paint and filter. Now I am gonna make a shield to block off from engine. give it a shot it doesn't take much versus 300.00 for a name brand. I might try 2 45* bends right off the engine, but not sure yet if it will work.

Re: need some tips for adding some hp

adding an exhaust is about all you can really do w/ your knowledge right. its fairly simple to do.

if you get into changing intakes, runners it will be a waste of money unless you match heads and a cam to it.

you could do a set of 1.6 rr's. there not that hard to do if you have a good set of intructions to use or a shop manual to follow.

like posted earlier learn more about the car and stay on the TGO forums and LEARN!!!!

good luck w/ your ride...
