help me pick a cam and converter for my 88 vette 350 tpi
im contemplating putting a camshaft in my 88 corvette while i have the motor torn down to replace the head gaskets. i have already had the heads redone, they are 113 casting aluminum heads that i shaved 25 thousandths off and did a fresh valve job as well as had them pressure checked. im thinking about buying a cam to put in the engine while i have it down this far. i do not want to do any computer work right away but i am wanting to get into tuning the motor myself later on. i would like to select a cam that will work with the factory tune. i am also going to install a bigger stall converter while i have the motor out. this will be strictly a street car, what would you recomend for the converter like a 2500 stall?

The GMPP ZZ4 camshaft or the Comp Cams CC304 are great choices that will work with the stock computer, and your heads.
2400-2800 is a good stall speed, too.

I don't have the aluminum heads, but I've got the zz4 cam with a 2400 stall and 3.27 gears and it's a great. If I was gonna do it again, and assuming I was NOT gonna go with better heads, I might have gone with a touch more gear out back. ...but the cam/stall works GREAT!

i was thinking about going with the zz4 cam. but i asked the same question on the vette forum and they recomended a zz9 cam, does anyone have any expirience with it? they also recomended a stock s10 converter which they said was a 2400 stall. does anyone have any expirience using that? im kinda hesitant about putting a s10 convertor in my corvette

Sure, the ZZ9 cam is good too, but TPIS wants a pretty penny for it. You can usually find the ZZ4 camshaft cheaper.
From what I know, the S10 converter is the same as the Corvette converter, 2000 rpms stall speed.

Double check this before you buy, but If I'm not mistaken, the S10, regardless of stall, is the larger diameter, which won't wind/spool/spin up as fast. Most the performance converter's are smaller, and are more "fun" per se, but not quite as "DD" able. I think stock is 11" and performance pieces are normally 9". ...from what I've seen...
I'm not very good at explaining that. Did it make sense?

the stock stall on your 88' Vette is only around 1300rpms. the S10 stall will give you about 1000 more rpm than that, but i wouldnt recommend it. Some Vette guys have used that converter with good results, others have not. I tried it years ago on my old 89' Vette and it just couldnt hold up to the torque. Had to replace it due to issues. Id go with an aftermarket converter, around 2500 - 2800 stall

LT4 Hotcam or the GM#846 would be nice... #846 might be a little on the large side, but either would be nice IMO.

Uhh.... what? I've always heard the stock Corvette converters are 2000 rpms. And the stock f-body ones are 1600 rpms. I've never heard of a 1300 rpm converter in a performance car.

Re: help me pick a cam and converter for my 88 vette 350 tpi
my bone stock 89' Vette converter would only stall to about 1300 rpm when brake stalled. alot of people on www.corvetteforum.com can confirm this
i believe the converters in the 84 - 86E vettes were 2000 stalls, but after that, it was 1300 or so

That's just incredible. 1300 rpms in a performance car, GM's flagship no less. Wow......
